What the IPYNB format is

IPYNB is the JSON-based Jupyter Notebook format. A .ipynb file stores code cells, Markdown explanations, mathematical expressions, execution results, images, cell outputs, and metadata. Jupyter Notebook, JupyterLab, Google Colab, and compatible Python environments create and open these files. The format is common in data analysis, scientific computing, machine learning, teaching, and reproducible research.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the Office Open XML format used by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and other word processors. A .docx file supports editable text, headings, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, styles, and page layout. It is suited to reports and formal documentation because recipients can revise, annotate, print, and archive the result without executing notebook code.

Conversion produces a document snapshot, not an executable notebook. Code cells can appear as formatted code, and their existing outputs can appear as static text or images, but the DOCX file does not retain the notebook’s kernel, execution order, or interactive behavior.

Convert with Jupyter and Pandoc

Jupyter’s standard nbconvert exporters do not provide a native DOCX target. The most controllable desktop workflow exports the notebook to Markdown and then uses Pandoc to create the Word document.

1. Install Jupyter or JupyterLab and Pandoc if they are not already installed.
2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the notebook.
3. Execute the notebook during export when outputs are missing or outdated:

jupyter nbconvert --execute --to markdown --output report_rendered report.ipynb

This creates report_rendered.md and, when needed, an attachment directory such as report_rendered_files. If the outputs are already current, omit execution:

jupyter nbconvert --to markdown --output report report.ipynb

Convert the generated Markdown to DOCX:

pandoc report_rendered.md --from markdown --to docx --output report.docx --resource-path=.:report_rendered_files

The resource path lets Pandoc locate exported images. On Windows, use the platform’s path-list separator if multiple resource directories are specified. Open report.docx in Word or LibreOffice Writer and check page breaks, table widths, image sizes, equation rendering, and heading styles.

Check quality and compatibility

• Notebook execution requires the correct Python environment, packages, input files, permissions, and kernel. Run the notebook first and inspect failed cells before exporting.
• Markdown conversion generally preserves headings, paragraphs, code, basic tables, and static images, but CSS styling, collapsible sections, custom HTML, and notebook metadata may be simplified or discarded.
• Interactive Plotly controls, JavaScript charts, embedded applications, and widgets are not interactive in DOCX. Export them as PNG or SVG images before conversion when their appearance must be included.
• LaTeX equations may require manual correction in Word. Rasterized equations are visually more predictable but are not editable.
• Large outputs, wide tables, and high-resolution plots can cause pagination or file-size problems. Remove unnecessary cell outputs, set suitable image dimensions, and review the final document at normal page size.
• Keep the original .ipynb file alongside the DOCX when reproducibility or later code execution is required.
