Some submission systems and document-management programs require a Word file instead of an image, while reports and archives may need the image packaged with editable text. Converting a JPEG to DOCX either embeds the original image or uses OCR to reconstruct its text, and those outcomes are not equivalent.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, also written as JPG, is a compressed raster-image format used for photographs, scans, screenshots, and images produced by phones, cameras, web browsers, and graphics software. Microsoft Photos, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and most mobile camera applications can open or create JPEG files.

JPEG uses lossy compression, so repeated editing and saving can remove detail. It stores pixels rather than document structure: letters are not automatically selectable characters, and the file has no Word paragraphs, tables, styles, headers, or footers.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the XML-based Word document format used by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs after export, and many document-management systems. It can contain editable text, images, tables, page layouts, headers, footers, styles, comments, and metadata.

A DOCX is useful when recipients must revise, search, annotate, spell-check, print, or submit the content to software that requires a Word document. Putting a JPEG inside a DOCX does not make text in the image editable.

How to convert a JPEG to DOCX
