Convert WBK to DOCX

A WBK file may be the only remaining copy of an older Word document, while current Word, office suites, or document-management systems may require DOCX. Converting a recoverable WBK locally also avoids exposing confidential content to an online service.

What the WBK format is

.wbk most commonly identifies a Microsoft Word backup file. Older Word versions could create a backup copy when the original document was saved, typically preserving the document's previous state rather than an autosave or necessarily the latest version. WBK files are encountered by users recovering documents from older computers, backup media, or folders containing the original Word file.

The extension is ambiguous. Corel WordPerfect has also used .wbk for backup files; WordPerfect's normal document format is .wpd, not .wbk. Identify the program that created the file before choosing a converter.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is the Office Open XML document format used by Microsoft Word 2007 and later. It is a ZIP-based package of XML files that can contain editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, fields, and other document elements.

DOCX is suitable for editing in current Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and compatible document systems. It is generally easier to exchange than legacy binary Word formats, but different applications can render fonts, pagination, fields, and other layout features differently.

How to convert a Microsoft Word WBK file

Microsoft Word

1. Make a copy of the WBK file and keep the original unchanged.
2. Open Word and choose File → Open → Browse on Windows or File → Open on macOS.
3. If the file is not listed, change the file filter to All files, select the WBK copy, and open it. If Word displays a format prompt, choose the detected Word document format rather than plain text.
4. Review the recovered text, headings, tables, images, page breaks, footnotes, fields, and revision markup.
5. Choose File → Save As, select Word Document (*.docx), use a new filename, and save.
6. Close and reopen the DOCX file, then check its pagination and important content.

If Word does not recognize the file, rename only the duplicate from filename.wbk to filename.doc and open it again. Renaming changes only the filename extension; it does not convert the file. This can help Word select its legacy binary-document handler. Older Word versions may open some WBK files more reliably than current versions, particularly when the backup was created by a very old release.

If the file appears damaged, try File → Open → Open and Repair. Save any recovered content as DOCX immediately, while retaining the original WBK and comparing the result with other available copies.

LibreOffice Writer

LibreOffice Writer can sometimes open a WBK that contains a legacy Word document, but it may not recognize the extension. On a duplicate, change .wbk to .doc, open it in Writer, inspect the result, and choose File → Save As with Office Open XML Text (*.docx). Use Microsoft Word first when the file contains complex formatting, forms, embedded objects, or tracked revisions.

Corel WordPerfect

If the WBK came from WordPerfect rather than Microsoft Word, open it in WordPerfect or the WordPerfect version associated with the backup. Use File → Save As and select a DOCX output format if that version supports DOCX export. If it does not, save as .doc or .rtf first, then open that file in Word or LibreOffice and save it as DOCX; inspect the formatting after each conversion.

Online conversion services

Services such as Zamzar, CloudConvert, or Convertio can be considered for a nonconfidential file, but support for WBK input is not universal and can change. Confirm on the service's current conversion page that it explicitly accepts .wbk and produces .docx; do not merely upload a renamed file to a generic DOC converter. Uploading exposes the document to the provider, so use local Word or LibreOffice for confidential, regulated, or legally significant material.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A Word WBK may be an older backup rather than the latest document, and it may be incomplete or damaged. Compare its contents and apparent date with the original file before treating the DOCX as final.

Conversion can alter fields, section breaks, floating text boxes, embedded objects, unsupported fonts, pagination, and revision markup. DOCX cannot store VBA macros; if macro preservation is required, use a macro-enabled .docm target when the recovered document actually contains the macro project. A WBK backup may not include every component of the original file, so saving as DOCM cannot recreate missing macros.
