What the WBK format is

In the Documents category, .wbk normally identifies a Microsoft Word backup file. 7. Close and reopen the DOCX file, then check pagination and other important content in the application that will use the file.

If the backup appears damaged, try File → Open → Open and Repair where that option is available. Save recovered content as DOCX immediately, but retain the original WBK for comparison. An older Word release may open a very old backup more successfully than a current release.

How to convert with LibreOffice Writer

1. Make a copy of the WBK file and rename the copy to filename.doc if Writer does not list or recognize the WBK extension.
2. Open the copy with File → Open in LibreOffice Writer.
3. Inspect the recovered document, then select File → Save As and choose Word 2007–365 (*.docx).
4. Open the saved DOCX in the target application and check its layout, especially if it contains complex tables, forms, floating objects, embedded files, or revision markup.

Microsoft Word is preferable when the file contains complex Word-specific formatting or embedded objects. LibreOffice may interpret some older binary Word features differently.
