Understanding wproj and wem file formats

.wproj files are project files created by Wwise, a professional audio middleware tool widely used in game development for interactive sound design. These files store the entire audio project setup, including events, sound objects, and configuration settings, but do not contain the actual audio data.

.wem files are the audio assets generated by Wwise after processing and exporting the project. They are encoded audio files optimized for playback in games and interactive applications.

How to convert wproj to wem

Converting a .wproj file to .wem is not a direct file conversion but an export process performed within the Wwise authoring tool. Since .wproj is a project file and .wem is an audio output format, you need to open the project in Wwise and generate the audio assets.

Follow these steps to export .wem files from a .wproj project:

  1. Open the Wwise authoring tool and load your .wproj project file.
  2. Verify that all audio sources and events are properly configured and linked.
  3. Go to the Project menu and select Generate SoundBanks.
  4. Configure the SoundBank settings as needed, including target platform(s) and language options.
  5. Click Generate to build the SoundBanks. This process will create the .wem files along with other necessary data files.
  6. Locate the exported .wem files in the output folder, typically under GeneratedSoundBanks within your project directory.

Important notes

  • There are no standalone converters that can convert .wproj to .wem because the project file requires the Wwise engine to process and export audio assets.
  • Ensure all original audio assets referenced in the project are available to avoid missing audio during export.
  • Wwise supports multiple platforms; select the correct platform when generating SoundBanks to obtain compatible .wem files.
  • The .wem files are typically used in game engines and require appropriate integration for playback.
