DOC files often contain a bibliography or source list that must be moved into a reference manager using BibTeX. BIB files store structured citation records, so this conversion usually requires extracting and checking references rather than changing the document extension.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format, used by Microsoft Word and compatible word processors for paragraphs, tables, images, styles, footnotes, and bibliographies. You may encounter it in older research papers, reports, manuscripts, and files exchanged before DOCX became the default Word format.

A DOC file normally stores references as formatted text, not as a BibTeX database. Word citation fields or a generated bibliography may contain useful information, but they do not guarantee that every author, title, date, identifier, or publication field can be exported automatically.

What the BIB format is

BIB is a plain-text bibliography database format commonly used with BibTeX and LaTeX, as well as citation managers such as Zotero. Each record has an entry type, a citation key, and named fields such as author, title, year, journal, publisher, volume, number, pages, and doi.

Because BIB is text-based, it is small, portable, version-control friendly, and editable with any text editor. Its strict field structure also lets LaTeX and reference software format citations consistently. BIB is appropriate when the DOC contains references that must be cited, sorted, or reformatted separately from the document.

How to actually convert DOC to BIB

Use the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the DOC, select BIB as the output format when available, run the conversion, and download the result. Open the resulting file in a text editor and check every record before importing it into a citation manager.

Extract and build the bibliography manually

  1. Make a backup of the original DOC and open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer.
  2. Locate the bibliography or reference list. Do not convert the document’s ordinary prose into bibliography entries.
  3. If needed, use File → Save As to create a DOCX or plain-text copy. LibreOffice can also export readable text from older DOC files.
  4. Create a file named references.bib in a plain-text editor using UTF-8 encoding.
  5. Turn each source into a BibTeX entry. For example: @article{smith2024,
    author = {Smith, Ana},
    title = {Example study},
    journal = {Example Journal},
    year = {2024},
    volume = {12},
    pages = {34-- forty}
    }
  6. Replace placeholder or uncertain values, escape special characters such as & and % where required by your BibTeX workflow, and give every entry a unique key.
  7. Import references.bib into Zotero or another reference manager, or cite it from a LaTeX document with \bibliography{references}.

For a long reference list, first extract the DOC’s text with LibreOffice or a text editor, then use a desktop reference manager to identify and complete entries. Pandoc can extract text from a converted DOCX with pandoc input.docx -t plain -o references.txt, but it does not reliably infer complete BibTeX records from ordinary formatted references.

Quality and compatibility limitations

There is no guaranteed lossless DOC-to-BIB conversion when the DOC contains only a visually formatted bibliography. Automatic conversion can confuse author names, split titles incorrectly, lose accents, omit editors or page ranges, and mistake URLs or publication numbers for other fields.

Check entry types such as @article, @book, @inproceedings, and @misc; verify DOI and ISBN values; preserve compound surnames and corporate authors with braces; and test the file in the intended BibTeX or BibLaTeX engine. A Word-generated bibliography may need to be rebuilt from the original source database because its displayed references can omit metadata that the source records contain.
