Many browsers, mobile apps, and image editors do not open XPS files, while JPEG is accepted for previews, uploads, messaging, and basic image editing. Converting the document renders each XPS page as a separate JPEG image that can be shared without an XPS viewer.

What the XPS format is

XPS, or XML Paper Specification, is a fixed-layout document format developed by Microsoft. It preserves page geometry, fonts, vector graphics, and print appearance instead of storing content as an easily editable document. XPS files use the .xps extension; OpenXPS files commonly use .oxps.

Windows print workflows can create XPS files through Print → Microsoft XPS Document Writer. They may contain exported reports, print jobs, archived documents, or attachments from older Windows systems. XPS Viewer can display them on supported Windows installations, but XPS support is limited on many non-Windows devices.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a lossy raster image format designed mainly for photographs and continuous-tone images. Files normally use .jpg or .jpeg and are supported by web browsers, phones, image editors, document systems, and social platforms.

JPEG is usually smaller than a PNG rendered at the same resolution because it discards visual data during compression. It works well for previews and screen sharing, but compression can blur small text and create artifacts around lines, signatures, and other sharp edges. JPEG does not preserve selectable text, links, document structure, or the original fonts.

How to convert XPS to JPEG

Convert locally on Windows

1. Open the file in XPS Viewer. On supported Windows versions, install it through Settings → Apps → Optional features → View features → XPS Viewer if necessary.

3. Install the desktop Poppler utilities and run pdftoppm -jpeg -r 150 input.pdf page in a command prompt. This creates files such as page-1.jpg and page-2.jpg.

Replace -r 150 with -r 300 for finer detail. The PDF intermediate file preserves the page layout during rendering, but this method requires XPS Viewer, Microsoft Print to PDF, and Poppler. If the source is an .oxps file, the selected viewer or conversion tool must support OpenXPS.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion rasterizes every page, so the JPEG contains pixels rather than editable document content. Increasing DPI improves text detail but also increases file size; it cannot restore information already lost during rendering. For small text, diagrams, signatures, or repeated editing, PNG or PDF may produce clearer results than JPEG.

Check page count, orientation, paper size, colors, and cropping after conversion. Unusual page dimensions, transparency, embedded fonts, and renderer differences can change the appearance. Keep the original XPS or a PDF copy for archival use, and use JPEG as the compatibility or preview version.
