Free online OXPS to JPEG converter

A recipient may need JPEG files because the target device, website, messaging app, or image editor does not support OXPS. Rendering the document as JPEG also makes page images easier to share, but removes selectable text and document structure.

What the OXPS format is

OXPS, or Open XML Paper Specification, is Microsoft's newer fixed-layout document format. It uses XML page descriptions, fonts, graphics, and other resources inside a ZIP-based package, preserving the appearance of a printed page rather than storing editable word-processing content.

Windows computers can create OXPS files through Microsoft XPS Document Writer, particularly Windows 8 and later. They may contain reports, forms, or other print-to-file documents. XPS Viewer and some document-management programs can open them, but many browsers, image editors, and mobile applications cannot. OXPS is related to the older .xps format, but older XPS-only software may require a separate conversion first.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a lossy raster-image format designed for photographs and continuous-tone images. It is supported by web browsers, phones, social networks, office applications, image editors, and most printing systems.

JPEG provides broad compatibility and relatively small files, but compression can blur small characters and create halos around sharp lines. A multi-page OXPS document normally produces one JPEG per page because JPEG has no standard multi-page document structure.

How to convert OXPS to JPEG

Use the 101convert.com converter

1. Open the OXPS-to-JPEG converter on 101convert.com. It can be used free without installing software.
2. Select or upload the file ending in .oxps.
3. Choose JPEG as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated image files. For a multi-page document, expect one JPEG per page or a ZIP archive containing the page images, depending on the converter's output.

Use a local Windows workflow

1. Open the OXPS file in XPS Viewer. On Windows installations where it is absent, add XPS Viewer through Settings → Optional features, if the operating system provides it.
2. Choose File → Print, select Microsoft Print to PDF, and save the result as document.pdf.
3. Rasterize the PDF with a local tool such as Poppler's pdftoppm command:

pdftoppm -jpeg -r 200 document.pdf page

This creates files such as page-1.jpg and page-2.jpg. Use -r 300 when small text or fine lines must remain clearer, accepting larger output files. If XPS Viewer cannot open the OXPS file, use another locally installed application that explicitly supports OXPS and can print or export it to PDF. A tool that supports only legacy XPS may not open OXPS directly.

Quality and compatibility limits

Rasterization removes searchable text, hyperlinks, embedded fonts, and scalable vector graphics. Use approximately 200–300 DPI for ordinary document pages; lower settings reduce file size but can make small text unreadable.

JPEG compression is a poor choice for repeated editing or archival masters, especially for text-heavy pages, forms, diagrams, and line art. Keep the original OXPS or an intermediate PDF, and use a high JPEG-quality setting when the image will be printed. Inspect pages containing small text, thin lines, transparency, or unusual fonts because different renderers can produce slightly different results.
