Convert DOC to VCF

Phones, email clients, and address-book services require VCF to import contacts, while a DOC file normally stores those details as formatted text or a table. Because DOC has no standard contact-field structure, conversion requires extracting the data, organizing it into fields, and exporting vCards.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word's binary document format used by Word 97–2003 and supported by older Word versions, LibreOffice Writer, and other word processors. It stores paragraphs, tables, styles, images, and page layout, not a contact database.

Contact data may appear as a table, one contact per paragraph, an address block, or scanned pages. Tables are the easiest source; free-form text requires manual separation and cleanup.

What the VCF format is

VCF, also called vCard, is a text-based contact format supported by Android, iOS, Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, and many CRM systems. A vCard can contain names, organizations, job titles, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, birthdays, notes, and photos.

One .vcf file can contain one contact or multiple BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD blocks. vCard 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0 are common; vCard 3.0 is usually the safest choice for older phones and desktop applications.

Desktop conversion with LibreOffice and Thunderbird

1. Open the DOC in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. If it contains a table, copy the table into LibreOffice Calc; if it contains paragraphs, extract the text and place one contact on each row.
2. Create columns such as First Name, Last Name, Organization, Phone, Mobile, Email, Street, City, State, Postal Code, and Country. Separate multiple values into appropriate columns where possible.
3. Correct merged cells, duplicated contacts, extra spaces, split names, invalid email addresses, and incorrectly recognized digits. Store phone numbers in international form, such as +1 212 555 0100, when the destination supports it.
4. In Calc, choose File → Save As, select Text CSV (.csv), choose UTF-8 encoding, and use one delimiter consistently. Keep the first row as column headings so the import wizard can identify the fields.
5. Open Thunderbird's Address Book and choose Import. Select the CSV file and map every column to the correct contact field, including phone type and address components.
6. Inspect several imported contacts, then select the address book or contacts and choose its Export command. Select vCard or .vcf if offered. If the export dialog offers a version, choose vCard 3.0 for broad compatibility.
7. Open the resulting VCF in a test address-book application before loading it onto the target device. A multi-contact file should contain a separate BEGIN:VCARD block for every contact.

Using Outlook

Move a DOC table into Excel or Calc and save it as CSV. In classic Outlook, use File → Open & Export → Import/Export → Import from another program or file, select Comma Separated Values, and map the columns to Outlook fields. Outlook can save an individual contact through File → Save As using vCard format, but it may not export an entire address book as one VCF; Thunderbird, Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, or a dedicated contact utility is more suitable for bulk export.

Using Google Contacts or Apple Contacts

Google Contacts provides an online route after the DOC data has been converted to a clean CSV: use Import to upload the CSV, select the imported contacts, then choose Export → vCard. On macOS, import the prepared contacts into Apple Contacts if the installed version supports CSV import, verify the field mapping, select the contacts, and use File → Export → Export vCard. If CSV import is unavailable, use a contact utility or import through Google Contacts first.

Online conversion services

A direct online DOC-to-VCF service cannot reliably interpret free-form Word content. For a hosted workflow, extract and structure the data locally, then use Google Contacts or a reputable CSV-to-vCard service such as ConvertCSV for the final conversion. Check field mapping, vCard version, file retention, privacy terms, and whether multiple contacts are returned in one file. Do not upload private address books, customer records, or regulated personal data to an unverified service.

Quality and compatibility limits

Automatic extraction cannot consistently determine where one contact ends, distinguish mobile, work, and fax numbers, or split a full name into given and family names. Word formatting, comments, hyperlinks, page layout, and images do not automatically become useful vCard fields.

Scanned DOC pages require OCR before extraction. OCR can alter digits, punctuation, accented characters, and email addresses, so every extracted contact must be checked manually. Use UTF-8 for the intermediate CSV to preserve non-ASCII names.

Test the VCF in the destination application because older devices may ignore multiple phone numbers, notes, photos, or vCard 4.0 properties. A VCF is not a substitute for a backup: retain the cleaned CSV and the original DOC until the imported contacts have been verified.
