Convert IWA to XLS

Convert a complete Numbers workbook to legacy XLS; standalone IWA files are not usable inputs.

Make XLS files online

We can't read IWA files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into XLS:

How to convert iwa to xls file

Legacy Excel installations, reporting systems, and embedded devices may require a spreadsheet in .xls format. A standalone .iwa file cannot normally be converted for that purpose; you need the complete Apple Numbers document that contains it.

What the IWA format is

.iwa files are internal Apple iWork data files stored inside .numbers, .pages, and .key document packages. They contain serialized objects such as table cells, formulas, formatting, and presentation data, commonly using Apple’s protocol-buffer-based structure and Snappy compression.

Numbers creates and reads these files as part of a document package. They are not independent workbooks, and renaming .iwa to .xls changes only the filename extension; it does not decode or convert the contents. Reconstructing a spreadsheet from one IWA component would require interpreting multiple internal files and the package’s relationships, so request the original .numbers file instead.

What the XLS format is

.xls is Microsoft Excel’s binary Excel 97–2003 workbook format. Its main advantage is compatibility with older Excel versions, legacy import routines, accounting software, and devices that do not support .xlsx.

It supports worksheets, formulas, cell formatting, and many charts, but each worksheet is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns. It also cannot represent every feature available in current Numbers or Excel, so exporting to XLS can alter or discard content.

How to convert the document

  1. Obtain the complete .numbers file. An isolated IWA file is not a practical input for normal conversion tools.
  2. On macOS, open the file in Apple Numbers and choose File → Export To → Excel. Numbers normally creates an .xlsx workbook, not an .xls workbook.
  3. If Numbers is unavailable, upload the original file to iCloud.com, open it in Numbers, and use the document’s download or export command to obtain an Excel copy. The exact menu label can vary with the current iCloud interface.
  4. Open the resulting .xlsx in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc. In LibreOffice, choose File → Save As, select Excel 97–2003 (*.xls), confirm the legacy-format warning, and save. In Excel, use File → Save As and select Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls).
  5. Reopen the saved .xls and check formulas, dates, decimal separators, sheet names, merged cells, charts, print areas, and number formats before delivering it.

Online conversion options

CloudConvert, Zamzar, and similar services may convert .xlsx to .xls; support for complete .numbers files varies, so check the service’s current format list before uploading. They cannot normally interpret a standalone .iwa file.

For confidential or regulated data, use Numbers, Excel, or LibreOffice locally instead of uploading the workbook. If an online service accepts .numbers, upload the complete document package rather than an extracted internal file, and verify the downloaded workbook in desktop software.

Compatibility limitations

Conversion can change table placement, formulas, fonts, conditional formatting, charts, hyperlinks, filters, print settings, and unsupported Numbers features. Functions without an XLS equivalent may be replaced with values or produce errors, and large sheets may exceed the legacy row or column limits.

If the recipient accepts .xlsx, use it instead of .xls because it supports larger worksheets and generally preserves more spreadsheet features. Keep the original .numbers file as the authoritative copy; the legacy export is a compatibility copy, not a lossless representation.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert IWA to XLS directly.
Thus, there is no so-called iwa to xls converter or a free online .iwa to .xls conversion tool.
