Convert IWA to PPT

A recipient or older presentation system may require a PowerPoint file instead of an Apple Keynote presentation. An isolated .iwa file cannot provide that conversion; the complete .key presentation is required.

What the IWA format is

.iwa files are internal binary components used by Apple iWork applications, including Keynote, Pages, and Numbers. They store serialized document data, commonly using protocol-buffer structures with Snappy compression, rather than representing a complete user-facing document.

Keynote stores many IWA components, media files, thumbnails, indexes, and metadata inside a .key package. Pages and Numbers use similar internal components in their own packages. You may see individual IWA files after extracting a package, inspecting a backup, or receiving an incorrectly transferred iWork document. An IWA component is not a standalone presentation and does not retain enough context for dependable conversion.

What the PPT format is

.ppt is Microsoft PowerPoint's legacy binary presentation format, associated with PowerPoint 97–2003. Its main advantage is compatibility with older PowerPoint installations and systems that cannot open modern .pptx files.

Current PowerPoint, Microsoft 365, LibreOffice Impress, and most conversion services use .pptx, the newer XML-based format. PPTX generally preserves more layouts, media, animations, and editing features, so it should be the target unless a legacy application specifically requires .ppt.

How to perform the conversion

1. Find the original Keynote presentation with the .key extension. If you have only IWA files, obtain the complete presentation from its sender or restore it from a backup. Renaming .iwa to .ppt or .pptx does not convert it.
2. Open the .key file in Keynote for macOS. Check fonts, slide layouts, charts, tables, grouped objects, audio, video, animations, and speaker notes before exporting.
3. Choose File → Export To → PowerPoint, then save the exported presentation as .pptx.
4. When an actual legacy PPT file is required, open the exported PPTX in Microsoft PowerPoint or LibreOffice Impress. Choose File → Save As and select PowerPoint 97–2003 (*.ppt). Reopen the saved file and inspect the slides.

On a Mac without the desktop app, upload the complete .key file to iCloud Drive, open it with Keynote for iCloud, and use More (…) → Download a Copy → PowerPoint when the option is available. This normally produces PPTX; use PowerPoint or LibreOffice to create legacy PPT if necessary.

Online conversion options

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may accept a complete .key presentation and produce PPTX or, depending on the service, PPT. Their supported input and output formats can change, so confirm that the service accepts .key before uploading. They generally cannot reconstruct a presentation from standalone IWA files.

Use an online service only when the presentation is suitable for third-party processing. For confidential slides, embedded data, or proprietary media, use Keynote locally and retain control of the source file.

Quality and compatibility limits

Keynote and PowerPoint implement different layout and animation models. After export, verify custom fonts, text wrapping, masks, transparency, grouped objects, charts, tables, transitions, animations, embedded media, hyperlinks, and speaker notes. Missing fonts can change line breaks and slide dimensions; unsupported effects may be flattened, simplified, or omitted.

Converting PPTX to legacy PPT can cause additional layout and feature loss because PPT supports fewer capabilities. Keep the original .key package and the exported .pptx; use the legacy .ppt copy only where required.
