A .part file usually means a browser or download manager has not finished saving a presentation. To use it in PowerPoint or share it as an editable slide deck, finish or restart the download first; conversion software cannot reconstruct missing bytes.

What the PART format is

.part is generally a temporary filename extension for an incomplete Internet download, not a presentation format. Browsers and download managers such as Mozilla Firefox and various file-transfer applications use it while receiving a file; the extension is removed or replaced when the download completes.

A PART file does not identify the original format. Its completed content might be a .ppt, .pptx, PDF, archive, video, or another file type. A partial download may lack the file header, slide data, or other bytes required for opening and conversion.

What the PPT format is

.ppt is Microsoft PowerPoint's binary presentation format used primarily by PowerPoint 97–2003 and supported for compatibility by newer PowerPoint versions and LibreOffice Impress. It stores slides, text, layouts, images, animations, notes, and some embedded objects in an editable presentation.

PPT is useful when a recipient or older presentation system specifically requires the legacy format. For new presentations, .pptx is normally preferable because it supports newer features, better compression, and a more widely maintained document structure.

How to actually convert PART to PPT

  1. Finish the download. Return to the browser or download manager that created the file and use its resume option. If the source is unavailable or the download repeatedly fails, download the presentation again rather than converting the incomplete file.
  2. Identify the original extension. Check the download page, URL, email attachment, or sender information. Enable file-name extensions in the operating system so that a name such as presentation.ppt.part is visible. Do not rename the file to .ppt merely because it contains the word presentation.
  3. Rename only a demonstrably complete file. If the download completed but retained the temporary suffix, rename presentation.ppt.part to presentation.ppt. If the original was a modern PowerPoint file, rename it to presentation.pptx instead. Renaming changes the label, not the contents, so it works only when the file is already a complete presentation.
  4. Convert a completed PPTX when necessary. Open the file in Microsoft PowerPoint and choose File → Save As, then select PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation (*.ppt). In LibreOffice Impress, use File → Save As and select PowerPoint 97-2003 (.ppt). Confirm any compatibility warning before saving.
  5. Use the built-in online converter if desktop software is unavailable. On 101convert.com, upload the completed source file, choose PPT as the output format, and download the result. A PART file must be completed and renamed to its real source extension first; an online converter cannot repair an interrupted download.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A PART extension provides no conversion information, so the original file type and download status must be established before processing. If PowerPoint, LibreOffice, or the converter reports corruption, the file is probably incomplete or damaged and should be downloaded again.

Saving PPTX as PPT can alter unsupported transitions, animations, fonts, embedded media, SmartArt, charts, and newer layout features. Open the resulting file in the target PowerPoint version and inspect every slide, especially media playback, fonts, and object positioning.
