.part file usually appears when a browser or download manager has not finished saving an image that another program requires as JPEG. Completing the download is normally necessary before conversion; a converter cannot reconstruct missing image data from an incomplete file.
What the PART format is
.part is generally a temporary partial-download file, not a standalone image format. Web browsers and download managers create it while receiving a file, then rename it to the original extension after the download completes; Mozilla Firefox commonly uses .part for this purpose. The file may contain a JPEG, PDF, archive, video, or another Internet download, so its extension does not identify the actual content.
If the download is still listed in the browser or download manager, resume it there. Do not rename an actively downloading file. If the download failed permanently, obtain the original file again from the source rather than trying to convert incomplete data.
What the JPEG format is
JPEG, usually named with .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy raster-image format widely accepted by browsers, email applications, phones, social networks, and image editors. It produces relatively small files by discarding image detail, making it suitable for photographs and web sharing.
JPEG is less suitable for screenshots containing sharp text, line art, transparency, or repeated editing. It supports no transparency, and saving the same image repeatedly can reduce quality.
How to actually convert PART to JPEG
- Check the download status in the program that created the file. Resume or restart the download and wait until the temporary
.partfile disappears or becomes the completed file. - Identify the completed file's original type. A browser may reveal it in the download list, source URL, HTTP filename, or file properties. If the completed file is already
.jpgor.jpeg, no conversion is required. - If the completed file has an image extension such as
.png,.webp, or.bmp, open it in an image editor and choose File → Export or File → Save As, select JPEG, set the quality, and save a new.jpgfile. - For batch or command-line conversion, ImageMagick can convert a completed source image:
magick input.png -quality 90 output.jpg. Replaceinput.pngwith the actual completed filename; do not pass an unfinished.partfile unless its contents are known to be a complete image. - You can also upload a completed, recognized image to the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. A partial download may be rejected or produce a corrupt result because the missing bytes cannot be recreated.
If a completed file has no useful extension, make a copy and inspect that copy with an image viewer or the operating system's file-identification tools. Rename it to .jpg only when it is already a complete JPEG; renaming changes the label, not the image encoding.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Converting a complete PNG or other raster image to JPEG requires choosing a background color when the source has transparency; transparent areas commonly become white or another editor-defined color. A quality setting around 85–90 is a practical compromise for photographs, while higher settings create larger files without restoring detail already lost in the source.
A genuinely incomplete .part file cannot be converted reliably. If a viewer shows only part of an image, the download must be resumed or replaced; JPEG conversion does not repair truncated data.
