What the PPTX format is
.pptx is the Office Open XML presentation format introduced with Microsoft Office 2007 and used by current Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft 365. It is a ZIP-based package of XML files and associated resources for slides, text, themes, images, charts, audio, video, animations, and other presentation data. Microsoft PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, Apple Keynote, and other compatible programs can open or create PPTX files. PPTX does not support VBA macros; macro-enabled presentations use .pptm.
What the PPT format is
.ppt is the binary PowerPoint 97–2003 presentation format. Its main advantage is compatibility with legacy PowerPoint installations, older presentation hardware, and workflows that require Office 97–2003 files. It cannot represent every feature available in PPTX, and its file size is not predictably smaller because size depends on the presentation's content.
How to convert a PPTX file to PPT
Microsoft PowerPoint
- Open the
.pptxfile in the desktop version of PowerPoint. - Choose File → Save As or File → Save a Copy.
- Set the file type to PowerPoint 97–2003 Presentation (*.ppt), choose the destination, and select Save.
- If PowerPoint shows a compatibility warning, review the affected features and choose Continue to create the file, or cancel and revise the presentation first.
- Close and reopen the resulting
.pptfile. Check representative slides, media, links, notes, and animations before distributing it.
Keep the original .pptx as the master copy. Saving over it in the older format can remove information that cannot be restored by converting back.
LibreOffice Impress
- Open the presentation in LibreOffice Impress.
- Choose File → Save As.
- Select PowerPoint 97–2003 (*.ppt) in the file-type list.
- Use a filename ending in
.ppt, select Use PowerPoint 97–2003 Format if prompted, and save.
For automated conversion, LibreOffice can use soffice --headless --convert-to ppt --outdir output presentation.pptx. The command creates a converted file but does not verify visual fidelity, so inspect the output manually.
Online conversion

Do not upload confidential presentations unless the service's storage, processing, and deletion terms are acceptable for that data.
Compatibility limits
The binary format may replace or simplify newer transitions, animations, SmartArt effects, 3D objects, chart features, theme behavior, transparency, embedded media behavior, and other PPTX-specific content. Video and audio may also fail on the target computer because of unsupported codecs or linked files. A font is not converted into a different font merely because the file format changes; if the target computer lacks the original font, text can reflow, wrap differently, or overflow.
After conversion, check slide dimensions, text wrapping, tables, charts, hyperlinks, images, audio, video, speaker notes, animation order, and presenter-view content. A valid conversion rewrites the ZIP/XML package as a binary PowerPoint file; changing .pptx to .ppt in the filename does not convert the format.
