What the MD format is
In the Documents category, MD means a Markdown document: a plain-text file containing lightweight markup for headings, lists, links, tables, code blocks, emphasis, and images. Common creators include Visual Studio Code, Obsidian, Typora, GitHub editors, documentation systems, and ordinary text editors. Markdown is commonly used for README files, technical documentation, notes, and source-controlled project content. Its .md extension does not store slide layouts, animations, speaker notes, or other presentation-specific structures.
What the PPT format is
PPT is Microsoft PowerPoint's older binary presentation format. It stores slides, text boxes, images, charts, transitions, and formatting for presentation and editing. Current PowerPoint versions normally use .pptx, the XML-based successor to .ppt; many converters therefore produce PPTX first. Use the older PPT format only when a recipient or legacy application specifically requires it.

Using Pandoc
Pandoc can generate an editable PowerPoint presentation from Markdown. Install Pandoc, place the source file and any referenced images in accessible paths, then run:
pandoc input.md --slide-level=1 -o output.pptx
With this setting, level-one headings generally define slides, while the following content becomes each slide's body. Use a reference presentation to control the theme, fonts, colors, and layout:
pandoc input.md --reference-doc=template.pptx -o output.pptx
Open the result in PowerPoint or LibreOffice Impress. To create the legacy format, use File → Save As and choose PowerPoint 97–2003 (*.ppt), if the installed office application supports that export.
Quality and compatibility
Markdown has no universal rule for converting paragraphs into well-designed slides, so long sections may become crowded or split unexpectedly. Add deliberate level-one headings, shorten paragraphs into bullet points, and resize large tables or images after conversion. Relative image links must remain valid during conversion; remote URLs, unsupported image formats, custom Markdown extensions, and embedded HTML may be omitted or rendered differently.
Pandoc's PPTX output supports ordinary text, headings, lists, links, images, and many tables, but advanced Markdown features do not map directly to PowerPoint objects. Review fonts, code blocks, equations, right-to-left text, animations, and speaker notes manually. If the destination explicitly demands .ppt, converting the generated .pptx through PowerPoint or LibreOffice is safer than merely renaming the extension.
