How to convert djvu to jpg file

Some image editors, websites, and mobile devices do not open DJVU files but accept JPG images. Converting the pages produces shareable, editable raster files, with one JPG normally created for each page.

What the DJVU format is

DJVU (also written DjVu) is a document format developed for scanned books, newspapers, manuals, and archival documents. It compresses text, line art, and background images separately, which can make scanned documents smaller than comparable PDFs while retaining readable page images.

A DJVU file can contain multiple pages, an OCR text layer, hyperlinks, bookmarks, and metadata. It is used mainly by digital libraries, scanned-book archives, and older document collections. DjVuLibre, WinDjView, and DjView are examples of software that can decode or display it.

What the JPG format is

JPG, or JPEG, is a widely supported raster-image format. Browsers, standard image viewers, office software, mobile devices, and most image editors can open .jpg files without a specialist document reader.

JPEG uses lossy compression, so it usually creates smaller files than uncompressed page images. It works well for photographs, grayscale scans, previews, and sharing, but repeated saving can introduce artifacts around text and sharp edges. A JPG contains only a rendered page image; it does not retain the DJVU file's searchable text, links, bookmarks, metadata, or multi-page structure.

Convert with 101convert.com

  1. Open the DJVU-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com. It can be used free without installing software.
  2. Select the .djvu file from your device.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
  4. Download the resulting JPG file or files. A multi-page DJVU normally produces one JPG per page, sometimes packaged in a ZIP archive.

Check the output page count before deleting the source file. Do not upload confidential documents, personal records, or copyrighted material unless the service's file-handling terms permit it.

Convert locally with DjVuLibre and ImageMagick

For offline processing, DjVuLibre can render a DJVU page to an intermediate image and ImageMagick can encode that image as JPEG. The following example exports page 1:

ddjvu -format=ppm -page=1 input.djvu page-1.ppm

Encode the rendered page with a selected JPEG quality:

magick page-1.ppm -quality 90 page-1.jpg

Repeat the ddjvu command with -page=2, -page=3, and so on for additional pages, changing the output filename each time. Page numbering is one-based. A script can automate this loop when the document's page count is known.

The default rendering size depends on the source document. If text is too small, render at a larger size with -scale or specify pixel dimensions with -size, then inspect the result:

ddjvu -format=ppm -page=1 -scale=200 input.djvu page-1.ppm

-scale=200 requests a larger render than the default; it is not a guaranteed 200-dpi output. Use a known pixel size, such as -size=2480x3508 for an approximately A4-sized target, when a fixed output dimension is required. Preserve the page's aspect ratio and avoid enlarging beyond the detail present in the DJVU source.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • One JPG represents one rendered page. JPG has no native multi-page document structure, so a multi-page DJVU must become separate images or an archive containing them.
  • Rasterization removes the OCR layer, selectable text, links, bookmarks, and metadata. Run OCR again on the JPGs if searchable text is needed.
  • A render around 200–300 dpi is generally adequate for ordinary document text when the source supports that resolution. Increasing dimensions cannot restore detail that was absent from the DJVU.
  • ImageMagick quality values around 85–92 often reduce file size while keeping scans readable. Higher values increase size and do not reverse losses already present in the DJVU.
  • PNG or TIFF is usually a better target for monochrome text, diagrams, or sharp line art because both avoid JPEG's block and ringing artifacts. Choose JPG when broad compatibility and smaller files are the priority.
  • A DJVU containing color or grayscale pages may produce large JPGs at high render sizes. Lower the pixel dimensions or JPEG quality when file size matters, but verify that small text remains legible.
