What the DJVU format is

DJVU is a document format designed for scanned books, manuals, newspapers, and archival pages. It separates foreground text, background patterns, and color images so scanned documents can remain relatively small while retaining detail. A DJVU file may also contain an OCR text layer for searching and text selection.

Digital libraries, scanning projects, and older document repositories commonly distribute DJVU files. DjVuLibre, DjView, Okular, and some specialist document viewers can open them, but many current browsers, office applications, and mobile devices do not support DJVU directly.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that preserves page dimensions, positioning, images, fonts, and other content across operating systems. Browsers, e-readers, printers, archive systems, and document-management applications support it widely.

PDF is usually the more compatible choice for printing, sharing, submitting, annotating, signing, or combining pages with other documents. Searchable text is not guaranteed: it remains available only if the conversion preserves the DJVU text layer or OCR creates a new one.

How to convert DJVU to PDF

Using the 101convert.com converter

1. Open the DJVU-to-PDF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .djvu file and start the conversion.
3. Download the resulting .pdf file when processing finishes.
4. Open the PDF and check page count, order, orientation, text legibility, and completeness.

This option requires no installation and is suitable for occasional conversions. Do not upload confidential, copyrighted, or restricted documents unless the service's terms for processing, storage, and deletion meet your requirements.

Using DjVuLibre

Install DjVuLibre through the operating system's package manager, then run:

ddjvu -format=pdf input.djvu output.pdf

Replace input.djvu and output.pdf with the actual source and destination filenames. The command renders the pages, so large or high-resolution documents can take time and produce a PDF larger than the original DJVU.

If the installed DjVuLibre build does not support direct PDF output, render the document to a multipage TIFF and convert that image file with an installed PDF utility:

ddjvu -format=tiff input.djvu pages.tif

img2pdf pages.tif -o output.pdf

Availability and TIFF handling can vary by utility version; verify the page count after conversion.

Using a desktop viewer

Open the file in DjView, Okular, or another viewer that supports printing or export. Choose File → Export if PDF export is available, or choose File → Print and select a system PDF printer. Set the page range, paper size, orientation, and output filename, then save as output.pdf. Menu names differ between applications and operating systems.

Quality and compatibility limits

Printing or rendering a DJVU as page images can increase the file size because PDF may store each page as a raster image. Keep the source resolution when small text, line drawings, or halftone images must remain readable; reducing resolution or JPEG quality can destroy detail.

Image-based output may not preserve the original OCR layer, searchable text, bookmarks, hyperlinks, annotations, metadata, or document structure. Test text selection and search rather than assuming they survived. If the PDF contains only page images, create a searchable copy with OCRmyPDF:

ocrmypdf --deskew output.pdf searchable.pdf

OCR can misread old typefaces, skewed or damaged scans, columns, handwriting, names, numbers, and page references. Review important text manually. Retain the original DJVU for archival purposes because it may be smaller or contain searchable and structural information that the converted PDF lacks.
