How to convert bm2 to pdf file

A .bm2 file may need conversion when a standard image viewer, print workflow, or recipient does not support the Subspace/Continuum bitmap format. PDF provides a portable, printable copy, but the result remains a static raster image.

What the BM2 format is

BM2 is a proprietary bitmap graphics format associated with the Subspace and Continuum multiplayer games. Game users, server administrators, and modders may encounter BM2 files containing interface artwork, sprites, textures, or other 2D graphics.

BM2 is not the common Windows .bmp format and cannot be converted by changing its filename extension. A compatible image viewer or converter must decode the BM2-specific structure first.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-description format that can contain raster images, vector graphics, text, fonts, and page dimensions. It is widely supported for printing, email attachments, archival copies, and controlled page-size output.

When a BM2 image is placed in a PDF, it normally remains a bitmap inside the document. PDF does not add editable layers, game-specific transparency behavior, animation, or other functionality from the original file.

Convert BM2 with a desktop image viewer

XnView MP is a practical first choice because its supported formats include Subspace bitmap files in current releases. Install it from the official XnView site, then:

  1. Open XnView MP and choose File → Open.
  2. Select the .bm2 file and confirm that the image displays correctly.
  3. For the most reliable workflow, save an intermediate lossless image with File → Export or File → Save as, choosing PNG or TIFF.
  4. Open the exported image and choose the operating system’s PDF printer: Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, or File → Print → PDF → Save as PDF in macOS Preview.
  5. Set the required paper size and orientation. Use 100% scale for exact pixel-to-page sizing, or use fit-to-page only when preserving the physical image dimensions is not necessary.
  6. Save the PDF and inspect it in a PDF reader for cropping, unexpected borders, transparency changes, and color shifts.

If XnView MP does not recognize a particular file, try XnView Classic or another application that explicitly lists Subspace/Continuum BM2 support. Do not rely on a program that only lists Windows BMP support; the formats are different.

Use an online converter

Online services such as Zamzar or Convertio can be considered only when their current image-format list explicitly accepts BM2. Upload the original file, select PDF as the output, download the result, and verify every page. Format support changes, and many general-purpose services reject BM2 or misidentify it, so a desktop decoder is usually more dependable.

Do not upload files containing confidential artwork, proprietary game assets, or personal information to an online service. If no service accepts the file, convert it locally to PNG first and create the PDF from that image.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion cannot recover detail that is absent from the BM2 bitmap. Enlarging a low-resolution image may produce pixelation, while resaving through a lossy format such as JPEG can introduce compression artifacts; use PNG or TIFF as the intermediate format.

Check transparency and palette-based colors after conversion. Some PDF workflows flatten transparent areas against white and may render indexed or unusual colors differently from the source viewer.

A PDF made from a bitmap has limited searchability and editability because the artwork is not converted into semantic text or vector objects. If the image must be edited, retain the original BM2 and the lossless PNG or TIFF alongside the PDF.
