What the OPML format is

OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) is an XML-based format for hierarchical outlines. It stores nested headings, notes, and attributes in <outline> elements; feed readers use the same structure to store RSS and Atom subscription lists.

Feed readers such as Feedly, Inoreader, and desktop RSS applications use .opml files to import, export, or back up subscriptions. Outliners, writing applications, and note-taking tools can also use OPML for moving structured content between programs.

What the PDF format is

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout document format. It preserves page size, typography, spacing, headings, and page breaks across operating systems; exported links may remain clickable when the source application supports them.

PDF is suitable for printing, email attachments, formal records, and read-only archives. It is not a replacement for OPML as structured data: a PDF normally does not preserve an importable hierarchy, feed URLs, update settings, or application-specific attributes.

How to convert an OPML file to PDF

Use a desktop application for layout control

1. Open an outliner, writing application, or mind-mapping program that explicitly supports OPML import.

3. Review the imported hierarchy, remove unwanted nodes or feed entries, and expand every branch that must appear in the document.
4. Choose File → Print and select the operating system’s PDF printer, or use File → Export → PDF if the application provides that command.

Menu names and OPML feature support vary by application. A desktop workflow is preferable when the outline needs controlled typography, page breaks, or selective content. Verify that the chosen program can import the particular OPML variant before relying on it.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Deep nesting can become unreadable on portrait pages. Landscape orientation, wider paper, smaller margins, or reduced scaling can limit wrapping.
• Print and export views may omit collapsed branches. Expand all required levels before conversion.
• Feed URLs and other OPML attributes may appear only as text or hyperlinks; they may not remain usable feed metadata in the PDF.
• Malformed XML, unsupported entities, or an incorrect character encoding can produce missing characters or failed imports. Validate or repair the OPML source if content is absent.
• Keep the original .opml file. A PDF usually cannot be imported back into a feed reader or outliner as an equivalent subscription list or editable hierarchy.
