Print providers, clients, document systems, and devices often require PDF because it opens without Adobe Illustrator and preserves a fixed page layout. Converting an .ai file also creates a practical review or archival copy while retaining the original AI file for editing.

Adobe Illustrator .ai is a native vector-artwork format used by illustrators, graphic designers, sign makers, packaging designers, and prepress teams. It can store paths, text, layers, artboards, swatches, effects, transparency, color settings, and placed raster images.

AI and PDF formats

AI files are working files, not universal delivery files. Illustrator-specific objects, live effects, editable text, and layer structures may not open accurately in other software.

Many AI files are saved with Create PDF Compatible File enabled. This embeds a PDF representation that lets some applications preview, place, or open the artwork, but it increases the AI file size and does not ensure full support for every Illustrator feature.

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that can contain vector artwork, raster images, text, fonts, color profiles, hyperlinks, and print-production data. Vector objects remain sharp when enlarged; photographs and other raster content retain only their original effective resolution.

A PDF is suitable for viewing, proofing, printing, and distribution, but it is not a replacement for the editable AI master. Reopening a PDF in Illustrator can change layers, editable text, live effects, transparency, and other native objects.

Convert an AI file on 101convert.com

1. Upload the .ai file to 101convert.com.

Export with Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is the preferred method for artwork that uses native Illustrator features or is intended for commercial printing.

1. Open the .ai file in Adobe Illustrator and resolve any missing-font or missing-link warnings.
2. Choose File → Save As or File → Save a Copy.
3. Select Adobe PDF (*.PDF), name the output file, and click Save.
4. Enable Use Artboards when each artboard should become a PDF page. Select all artboards or an artboard range.
5. Choose a PDF preset and set the required compression, marks, bleed, output, and security options.
6. Click Save PDF.

Without Use Artboards, Illustrator saves the PDF using the overall artwork bounds rather than separate artboard pages.

Use High Quality Print for general high-resolution output. Use PDF/X-4 only when the printer requests it; it supports live transparency and ICC-based color management. A printer may instead require PDF/X-1a or a different preset, color profile, bleed setting, or mark configuration. Smallest File Size reduces image resolution and is intended for screen distribution, not quality-critical print work.

The Illustrator PDF option Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities embeds Illustrator data in the PDF. It can make the PDF substantially larger; disable it for a delivery-only PDF unless later Illustrator editing from that PDF is required.

Quality and compatibility checks

Inspect the PDF at normal viewing size and at high zoom for clipped objects, substituted fonts, incorrect overprints, altered transparency, and low-resolution images. Compare the PDF page size with the intended trim size and confirm that multipage files contain the expected artboards.

Use Window → Links in Illustrator to locate missing placed images before export. Linked images must be accessible during PDF creation; the resulting PDF normally embeds the image data needed for viewing and printing.

Use Type → Find/Replace Font to detect unavailable fonts. PDF export can embed or subset fonts when their licensing permissions allow it. Converting text to outlines removes font dependency but makes text uneditable, can increase file size, and should be done only after proofreading.

For press work, obtain the printer's required PDF standard, color profile, bleed, and crop-mark instructions before export. Do not add crop marks unless requested, and do not force CMYK conversion unless the printer specifies a CMYK profile or workflow.

Keep the original .ai file, its linked assets, and its fonts where licensing permits. The PDF is the delivery format; the AI file remains the editable source.
