Convert PSB to PDF

A print bureau, client, browser, or document system may require a PDF instead of a Photoshop Large Document. Converting creates a portable proof or delivery copy, but it normally does not preserve the PSB’s complete editing structure.

What the PSB format is

PSB means Photoshop Large Document Format. Adobe Photoshop uses it for documents that exceed the usual PSD limits, including very large pixel dimensions and files larger than 2 GB. PSB can store layers, masks, channels, adjustment layers, smart objects, text, transparency, and other Photoshop-specific editing data.

Photographers, illustrators, sign and poster designers, cartographers, and print-production teams use PSB for panoramas, high-resolution composites, oversized artwork, and other documents that cannot fit within PSD limits. A PSB remains the appropriate master file when future Photoshop editing is required.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format supported by operating systems, browsers, print services, and document applications. It preserves page dimensions and the rendered appearance more consistently than an editable Photoshop file, making it suitable for proofs, submissions, client review, printing, and distribution.

A Photoshop PDF can contain Photoshop editing data when Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities is enabled, but that does not make it equivalent to the original PSB. Layers and other controls may be unavailable or editable only when the PDF is reopened in Photoshop. A standard delivery PDF generally contains a flattened or otherwise rendered composite.

Convert with Adobe Photoshop

1. Open the PSB with File → Open.
2. Check the canvas dimensions, resolution, color mode, visible layers, transparency, and color profile. Save a duplicate before flattening or changing the document.
3. Choose File → Save a Copy in current Photoshop versions, or File → Save As in versions that use the older command.
4. Select Photoshop PDF, specify a new filename, and save.
5. Choose High Quality Print or Press Quality for print output. Use Smallest File Size only when reduced resolution and stronger JPEG compression are acceptable.
6. Review the PDF options for downsampling, compression, color conversion, and output profile, then choose Save PDF.

Leave Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities enabled only if the PDF must be reopened in Photoshop with its retained editing data. Disable it for a smaller delivery file when a rendered result is sufficient; the option can increase the PDF size substantially.

Do not flatten the original PSB merely to export it. If flattening is needed to reduce memory use or avoid unsupported effects, duplicate the document first, then use Layer → Flatten Image on the duplicate.

Convert without Photoshop

Photopea can open many PSB files in a browser and export them through File → Export As → PDF. Its suitability depends on the file’s size and features; browser memory, unsupported Photoshop effects, and service limits can prevent successful processing. Upload confidential artwork only after checking the service’s privacy and storage terms.

Online conversion services

CloudConvert and Convertio provide PSB-to-PDF conversion when their current upload limits and PSB support accept the file. The general procedure is to upload the PSB, select PDF, start the conversion, and download the result. Check maximum file size, retention and deletion policies, account requirements, and whether the service rasterizes the document before uploading private, unreleased, or commercially sensitive artwork.

Online conversion is unsuitable for a file that exceeds the service limit or requires controlled color management. Photoshop or a local graphics application is preferable for color-critical and very large work.

Quality and compatibility limits

PDF export does not guarantee a smaller file. A very large raster image, lossless compression, embedded Photoshop editing data, or high-resolution output can produce a PDF larger than the PSB.

Photoshop PDF export has practical limits on file size, pixel dimensions, and PDF page dimensions. Very large PSB documents may exceed the limits even when the PSB opens normally; older Photoshop versions and PDF viewers can impose additional restrictions. If export fails, work from a copy and reduce pixel dimensions, crop unused canvas, export a flattened composite, divide the artwork into pages or tiles, or use a print-production workflow that supports oversized pages. Do not assume that lowering print resolution alone reduces the pixel dimensions: resample the image when the pixel count must decrease.

Inspect the exported PDF at 100% and, for production work, print a proof at the intended size. Downsampling removes fine detail, JPEG compression can create artifacts, and RGB-to-CMYK conversion can change color. Check transparency, clipping masks, blend modes, smart objects, text, layer effects, and embedded profiles because some features are rasterized or rendered differently outside Photoshop. A PDF viewer may show only the composite even when Photoshop editing data was retained.
