Convert PSB to CDR

A print provider, graphics department, or CorelDRAW-based workflow may require a .cdr file when the source artwork is a Photoshop Large Document. Converting it can make the artwork usable in CorelDRAW, but it does not automatically turn PSB pixels, layers, or effects into editable CorelDRAW objects.

What the PSB format is

PSB, or Photoshop Large Document, is Adobe Photoshop’s format for documents that exceed PSD limits. It supports files larger than 2 GB and documents up to 300,000 pixels in width or height, while PSD is limited to 30,000 pixels per dimension and 2 GB.

PSB can store layers, masks, channels, transparency, adjustment layers, smart objects, text, paths, and Photoshop-specific effects. It is used for large posters, panoramic images, high-resolution composites, scans, photographic retouching, and other pixel-based artwork. Many PSB features have no direct equivalent in CorelDRAW and may be flattened or rendered during conversion.

What the CDR format is

CDR is the native document format of CorelDRAW. It stores CorelDRAW pages and editable objects such as vector curves, shapes, fills, outlines, text, placed bitmaps, and page-layout elements. CDR is suited to logos, illustrations, signs, diagrams, packaging, and print layouts.

Putting a PSB image on a CorelDRAW page does not vectorize it. Photographs, painting, texture, and other pixel content normally remain an imported bitmap. Vector-like artwork must be recreated or traced if the recipient needs editable CorelDRAW curves.

How to convert PSB to CDR

Best desktop workflow

1. In Photoshop, make a copy of the original PSB and inspect its dimensions, resolution, color mode, transparency, visible layers, fonts, and effects.
2. For an editable-layer intermediary, use File → Save a Copy or File → Save As and choose Photoshop (*.PSD) only if the document fits PSD’s 30,000-pixel and 2-GB limits. Photoshop may flatten or discard features that PSD cannot store.
3. For a dependable rendered intermediary, export TIFF for print work or PNG when transparency or screen output is required. Preserve the required resolution and color profile. A very large PSB may need a reduced proof or a different production workflow because TIFF and CorelDRAW imports also have size and memory limits.
4. Open CorelDRAW and choose File → Import. Import the PSD, TIFF, or PNG, place it on the page, and verify its physical dimensions, transparency, resolution, and color appearance. Some CorelDRAW versions may accept PSB directly, but an exported intermediary is more compatible.
5. If the artwork contains logos, lettering, or simple shapes that must be editable, recreate them with CorelDRAW’s Bézier tools or select the bitmap and use Trace Bitmap. PowerTRACE is appropriate for clean, high-contrast artwork; it produces new vector shapes, not the original Photoshop layers, and photographs usually trace poorly. Remove unnecessary nodes and correct curves after tracing.
6. Set the page size, bleed, fonts, color settings, and print elements required by the recipient. Save with File → Save As, choose CDR - CorelDRAW, and select a CDR version supported by the recipient’s installation.

CorelDRAW is the appropriate desktop application for creating the final CDR. Photoshop is used to prepare the PSB because CorelDRAW does not reproduce Photoshop’s layer system, smart objects, adjustment layers, and filters as equivalent editable objects.

Online conversion

CloudConvert and Convertio sometimes list PSB-to-CDR conversion, while other services require PSB to PNG, TIFF, or PSD first. Availability and file-size limits change, so confirm that the service lists both the current input and target formats before uploading. Download the result, open it in CorelDRAW, and check page size, transparency, resolution, fonts, clipping, and color before delivery.

Use an online service only for non-confidential files that fit its limits. Online conversion commonly flattens layers and Photoshop effects, may rasterize text, and does not reliably create clean editable vectors. Do not treat a downloaded CDR as production-ready without inspection in CorelDRAW.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Raster content remains raster. Enlarging an imported bitmap in CorelDRAW does not add detail. Vectorize only the parts that need editable curves.
• Layers and effects can change. Masks, blend modes, adjustment layers, smart objects, filters, and clipping paths may render differently or become one bitmap.
• Text depends on fonts. Install the required fonts before preparing the file, or convert text to curves when consistent output matters. Outlined text cannot be edited as text.
• Color requires verification. Check RGB or CMYK mode, embedded profiles, transparency, spot colors, overprint settings, and the print provider’s required profile in CorelDRAW.
• Large documents consume substantial memory. Keep the original PSB, use a lower-resolution proof for review or transfer when appropriate, and do not replace a full-resolution production file with a preview.
• CDR versions are not interchangeable. Saving to an older version can improve compatibility but may remove newer CorelDRAW features. Confirm the recipient’s version before saving.
