Presentation artwork may need conversion when a print shop, sign workflow, or CorelDRAW project requires an editable .cdr file. PowerPoint does not normally export directly to CDR, so the artwork must pass through PDF, SVG, or another compatible format.
What the PPT format is
PPT is Microsoft PowerPoint’s legacy binary presentation format; current PowerPoint versions normally save presentations as .pptx. A PPT file can contain slides with text, images, shapes, charts, animations, audio, video, and presentation-specific layout data. Microsoft PowerPoint creates PPT files, while LibreOffice Impress can open and export many of them. The format is used for presentations, training material, sales decks, and slide-based artwork.
What the CDR format is
CDR is CorelDRAW’s native document format. It is intended for vector illustrations, page layout, typography, logos, technical drawings, signs, and print production. A CDR document can retain editable curves, fills, outlines, layers, pages, and CorelDRAW-specific effects. It is proprietary, and files saved by a newer CorelDRAW version may not open correctly in older versions.
Convert with PowerPoint and CorelDRAW
- Open the
.pptor.pptxfile in Microsoft PowerPoint and check every slide at its intended page size. - Remove or document animations, transitions, audio, video, speaker notes, and interactive controls; these cannot become editable static CDR objects.
- Export the presentation as PDF using File → Export → Create PDF/XPS or File → Save As → PDF. Choose the highest-quality or standard publishing setting rather than a minimum-size setting, and include all slides.
- Open CorelDRAW and use File → Import to select the PDF. Choose the required page and import options.
- When prompted about PDF text, choose editable text if later editing is required and the fonts are available. Choose curves when preserving the exact appearance is more important than text editing.
- Inspect imported groups, text, transparencies, clipping, line widths, image resolution, and page dimensions. Ungroup or edit objects only after confirming that their appearance is correct.
- Save the document with File → Save As and select CorelDRAW’s
.cdrformat. If the file will be opened elsewhere, confirm the required CorelDRAW version with the recipient.
PDF is usually the best intermediate format because PowerPoint can place vector shapes and text in the PDF while retaining raster photographs as images. CorelDRAW may still import a slide as grouped or fragmented objects rather than as the original PowerPoint object structure.
Use SVG for selected vector artwork
For diagrams, icons, and other shape-based artwork, select the relevant objects in PowerPoint and save them individually as SVG when that option is available, then import the files into CorelDRAW with File → Import. PowerPoint generally does not export an entire slide as one editable SVG through the normal save workflow. SVG can preserve vector geometry well, but charts, 3D objects, shadows, transparency, and some PowerPoint effects may be simplified; photographs remain raster images.
Convert without Microsoft PowerPoint
Open the file in LibreOffice Impress and export it with File → Export as PDF, then import the PDF into CorelDRAW and save as CDR. For a file named presentation.ppt, LibreOffice can export from a command line:
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output presentation.ppt
LibreOffice may alter fonts, spacing, SmartArt, charts, unsupported effects, and slide positioning before creating the PDF.
Online conversion options
CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar can be used to convert PPT or PPTX to PDF when desktop PowerPoint is unavailable. Download the PDF, import it into CorelDRAW, and save the result as CDR; these services should not be treated as dependable direct PPT-to-CDR converters because CDR output availability and editability vary. Uploading also exposes the presentation to a third party, so use local PowerPoint or LibreOffice conversion for confidential or production artwork.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Saving an imported PDF as CDR does not recreate the original slide hierarchy, animations, notes, hyperlinks, videos, or interactive behavior.
- Missing or substituted fonts can change character widths, line breaks, and object positions. Install the original fonts where licensing permits, or convert text to curves after checking the layout.
- Photographs and screenshots remain raster images; CDR cannot increase their pixel resolution. Check effective DPI at the final print size.
- PowerPoint artwork is commonly prepared for RGB screens, while print production may require CMYK colors, bleed, trim marks, and particular color profiles. Set these requirements in CorelDRAW before output.
- Transparency, gradients, shadows, masks, pattern fills, thin lines, and clipping paths can render differently after PDF or SVG import. Compare the CDR with the original slide and verify a test PDF or print proof.
