What the PPT format is

PPT is the binary presentation format used primarily by Microsoft PowerPoint 97–2003. It stores slides containing text, images, charts, tables, shapes, animations, transitions, and speaker notes; newer PowerPoint versions normally use .pptx. LibreOffice Impress and other presentation programs can also open and create PPT files.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s artwork format for vector illustrations and page layouts. It preserves editable paths, fills, strokes, type, clipping masks, and Illustrator-specific objects, making it suitable for logos, prepress artwork, cutting workflows, and detailed graphic editing. An AI file is not an artificial-intelligence data file.

Illustrator can open PDF-compatible artwork, but a PPT slide is not automatically transformed into clean, fully editable Illustrator objects. The result depends on how PowerPoint represents each slide element and how the conversion tool interprets it.

How to actually convert PPT to AI

Using PowerPoint and Adobe Illustrator

1. Open the presentation in PowerPoint.
2. Check slide dimensions, fonts, images, transparency, and colors before exporting.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, select PDF, and export all slides or only the required slide range.
4. Open the PDF in Adobe Illustrator with File → Open. Illustrator displays a page-selection dialog when the PDF contains multiple slides.
5. Select the required page, then choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator (*.AI), and save the artwork.
6. Inspect text, clipping masks, grouped objects, charts, and placed images before sending the AI file to production.

Using LibreOffice and Illustrator

Open the PPT in LibreOffice Impress, choose File → Export as PDF, then open the resulting PDF in Illustrator and save it as AI. This is useful when PowerPoint is unavailable, but layout differences can occur because fonts, chart rendering, and unsupported PowerPoint effects are implemented differently.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• PDF export preserves slide geometry and usually keeps text and basic shapes sharper than a raster screenshot, but it does not guarantee clean Illustrator paths.
• Photographs, screenshots, and other raster images remain raster images inside the AI file; conversion does not increase their resolution.
• Animations, transitions, audio, video, hyperlinks, speaker notes, and interactive presentation behavior are discarded.
• PowerPoint charts, SmartArt, 3D effects, shadows, gradients, transparency, and unsupported blend effects may open as grouped objects, clipping masks, flattened regions, or altered artwork.
• Missing fonts can cause substitution and text reflow. Install the original fonts before exporting, or convert text to outlines in Illustrator only after retaining an editable text copy.
• For print production, verify page size, bleed, CMYK conversion, image resolution, overprint settings, and embedded or linked assets in Illustrator; the original PPT color settings may not match the printer’s requirements.
