Free online FH10 to AI converter

An FH10 file may need conversion when an archived FreeHand drawing must be edited in Adobe Illustrator, sent to a print provider, or opened on a computer without FreeHand. Converting it to AI can retain editable vector artwork, but legacy effects and typography require inspection.

What the FH10 format is

FH10 is the proprietary document format used by Macromedia FreeHand 10, a vector illustration and page-layout application released in 2001. A .fh10 file can contain paths, text, gradients, blends, symbols, layers, multiple pages, and placed or linked raster images.

FH10 files remain in archives of logos, maps, technical drawings, advertisements, and prepress work. Current graphics applications do not reliably support the format, and later FreeHand releases used different extensions such as .fh11 and .fhmx.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. Depending on the Illustrator version and save settings, it can retain editable paths, layers, artboards, text objects, gradients, clipping masks, and Illustrator-specific effects. AI files can also include embedded or linked raster images.

AI is appropriate when the recipient uses Illustrator or needs to revise the drawing for print, packaging, signage, branding, or further vector export. AI compatibility is version-dependent; an older compatibility setting can improve access in legacy Illustrator releases but may discard newer Illustrator features.

How to convert an FH10 file

Using FreeHand and Illustrator

1. Make a copy of the original .fh10 file and open the copy in Macromedia FreeHand 10 or another installed FreeHand version that can read it.
2. Check page dimensions, layers, fonts, placed images, colors, transparency, overprinting, and separated or spot-color artwork.
3. Use File → Export in FreeHand and choose an Adobe Illustrator or Illustrator-compatible .ai export option if the installed version provides one. Select the oldest Illustrator version that the receiving application supports.
4. Open the exported file in Adobe Illustrator. Check every page, layer, path, image, color, and text object rather than assuming the export is identical.
5. Use File → Save As, choose Adobe Illustrator (AI), and select the required Illustrator compatibility version.

If the FreeHand installation has no usable AI export, export EPS from FreeHand, open the EPS in Illustrator, and save it as AI. EPS generally preserves vector paths but can flatten or alter FreeHand blends, transparency, symbols, clipping behavior, and page structure.

Legacy desktop compatibility

Current Illustrator releases generally do not open FH10 files directly. Adobe formerly provided a FreeHand import script for some Illustrator CS4 and CS5 workflows, but that legacy script is not a dependable solution for current Illustrator CC releases. If the original FreeHand application is unavailable, a trusted legacy workstation or an intermediate EPS or PDF export may be necessary.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• FreeHand blends, live effects, arrowheads, compound paths, symbols, clipping masks, and transparency may be changed, expanded, flattened, or rasterized.
• Text depends on the original fonts. Install the matching fonts before export, or outline a copy of the text when visual fidelity matters. Outlined text is no longer editable as text.
• Linked images must be available during export. Embed them when possible and verify their resolution, color mode, cropping, and placement in Illustrator.
• Spot colors, CMYK values, overprinting, trapping, and color profiles can map differently between FreeHand and Illustrator. Compare the converted file with the print specification and inspect separations when required.
• FreeHand pages may not map cleanly to Illustrator artboards, and page order or page dimensions may need manual correction.
• Conversion is not reliably reversible. Retain the original FH10 file, its fonts, linked images, and any required color profiles.
