How to convert fh10 to eps file

Archived FreeHand artwork often must be supplied to a print, publishing, sign-making, or legacy PostScript workflow that cannot open .fh10 files. Exporting it as .eps provides a more widely supported file while retaining scalable vector artwork where the format permits.
What the FH10 format is
FH10 is the native document format of Macromedia FreeHand 10, a vector illustration application released in 2001. It can store paths, text, fills, strokes, layers, gradients, symbols, blends, and references to placed bitmap graphics.
FreeHand 10 and FreeHand MX can generally open FH10 documents. The format is now encountered mainly in archived design projects, older print-production systems, and legacy logos or illustrations. Opening a file can still depend on the FreeHand version, installed fonts, linked images, and features used when the document was created.
What the EPS format is
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a file format for exchanging a single illustration or page element between graphics, publishing, prepress, sign-making, and other PostScript-based applications. It can preserve vector paths, making artwork scalable without the pixelation associated with a raster-only export.
An EPS can also contain a low-resolution preview for applications that cannot render PostScript directly. It is not a complete replacement for the FreeHand document: layers, symbols, editable blends, application-specific settings, multipage layouts, and some transparency effects may be flattened, discarded, or converted during export.
How to convert FH10 to EPS
Using the 101convert online converter
- Keep an unchanged backup of the original
.fh10file. - Open the FH10 converter on 101convert.com and upload the file.
- Select
EPSas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the resulting
.epsfile and open or place it in the application that will receive it. - Check the artwork at high zoom and verify text, page bounds, colors, strokes, clipping, and any placed images before sending it to production.
This option runs without installing desktop software. Do not upload confidential or restricted artwork unless the site’s handling and retention terms meet the project requirements.
Using Macromedia FreeHand
- Work on a copy of the FH10 file so the source remains unchanged.
- Open the copy in FreeHand 10 or FreeHand MX. Resolve missing fonts and confirm that linked graphics are available.
- Inspect the document and correct its page size, clipping paths, colors, overprint settings, and artwork bounds.
- Choose File → Export, select
EPSorEncapsulated PostScript, and enter a filename ending in.eps. - Choose the required page or document bounds, color settings, vector preservation options, and preview setting in the EPS export dialog.
- Open the exported file in a PostScript-aware application or place it in a test layout. Check the result before replacing the original file in a production workflow.
FreeHand has been discontinued, so this desktop method is practical mainly for users who already have a compatible, legally licensed installation. Current Adobe Illustrator releases do not provide dependable native FH10 support; Adobe’s historical FreeHand import script was intended for older Illustrator CS versions and should not be treated as a current conversion method.
Quality and compatibility limitations
- Preserve the FH10 source. EPS export is generally one-way and does not restore FreeHand layers, symbols, editable blends, or other application-specific structure when reopened.
- Check fonts. Missing fonts can cause substitution or text reflow. Converting text to outlines preserves its appearance but removes ordinary text editing and can increase path complexity. Font embedding or outlining must also comply with font licensing and production requirements.
- Check linked graphics. A linked bitmap must be available during export. If the workflow supports embedding, embed it; otherwise deliver the linked files with the EPS and verify their resolution and paths.
- Expect effects to change. Traditional EPS and older PostScript levels do not represent every modern transparency, soft effect, blend, clipping mask, or gradient. Flatten or rasterize only affected elements when necessary, and inspect the result at final output size.
- Confirm color requirements. EPS does not guarantee a particular color result. Ask the recipient whether the file must use CMYK, RGB, spot colors, or a specific color profile, then inspect separations when the artwork is intended for print.
- Do not rely on the preview. An EPS preview may be blank or visibly low-resolution in software that cannot interpret PostScript, while the underlying file remains valid. Validate the actual EPS in a compatible layout, illustration, or RIP workflow.
