Free online BMP to EPS converter

Some print, prepress, and legacy illustration systems accept EPS but reject BMP, so a bitmap must be packaged in an EPS file before placement or output. The conversion changes the file format, not the image into editable vector artwork.

What the BMP format is

BMP (Windows Bitmap) is a raster format that stores an image as a grid of pixels. It commonly uses little or no compression and supports color depths including 1-bit, 8-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit, depending on the BMP variant.

Windows Paint, older Microsoft graphics software, screenshots, scanners, hardware utilities, engineering applications, and legacy desktop-publishing systems may create BMP files. BMP is useful when software requires straightforward Windows-compatible pixel data, but its large files are less convenient for transmission and page-layout workflows.

What the EPS format is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript-based graphics format intended for placing artwork in page-layout, illustration, and prepress documents. It can contain vector paths, text, raster images, or a combination of these. Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, older QuarkXPress workflows, and some print or RIP systems support EPS.

An EPS file can include a bounding box and an optional preview image, allowing page-layout software to position and display the artwork before PostScript output. Its compatibility with older print-production systems is its main practical advantage. An EPS made from a BMP still contains pixel data, so enlarging it beyond the source image's effective resolution produces pixelation.

How to convert BMP to EPS

Using 101convert.com

To convert without installing software, upload the BMP to the built-in converter on 101convert.com, choose EPS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Do not use this method for confidential images unless the service's handling and retention terms meet your requirements.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick provides command-line conversion on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Run:

magick input.bmp -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 output.eps

Replace the filenames as needed. The -density 300 setting records a 300-pixel-per-inch interpretation for physical-size output; it does not add pixels or restore detail. Set the density to the value required by the receiving print workflow. If the BMP has no reliable resolution metadata, confirm the intended physical size separately.

Open the EPS in the target application after conversion. Older PostScript workflows may have limited support for particular compression methods, color modes, previews, or EPS features, so avoid adding optional compression unless the receiving system is known to support it.

Using GIMP

Open the file with File → Open, then choose File → Export As. Enter a filename ending in .eps, select Export, set the available EPS resolution and bounding-box options, and confirm the export. GIMP exports the bitmap as raster content inside EPS; it does not trace the image into paths.

Using Illustrator

In Illustrator, place the BMP with File → Place, position or scale it, then choose File → Export → Export As and select EPS. Include the required artboard or artwork bounds and select the color and preview options required by the print workflow. The placed BMP remains raster artwork inside the EPS.

Quality and compatibility limits

The EPS cannot contain more detail than the BMP. Calculate effective resolution from pixel dimensions and physical output size: an image intended to print 10 inches wide at 300 ppi needs approximately 3,000 pixels across.

Use tracing software such as Illustrator or Inkscape only when scalable paths are required. Automatic tracing changes edges, removes small details, and often needs manual cleanup; it is a separate vectorization process, not ordinary format conversion.

Transparency, indexed-color palettes, and embedded color profiles may be changed or discarded during EPS export. Convert to the RGB or CMYK mode required by the receiving workflow, and verify colors, clipping, transparency, bounding-box dimensions, and output size in the application that will place or print the EPS.

EPS is an older interchange format and may be unsupported or restricted in newer software. If the recipient accepts PDF, SVG, TIFF, PNG, or another modern format, confirm its requirements before choosing EPS.
