A sign-making system, graphics editor, or older print workflow may require EPS instead of PDF for importing artwork, editing paths, or placing a single-page illustration. Converting is also useful when a recipient accepts EPS but cannot import PDF directly.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-description format designed to preserve layout, fonts, images, color settings, and print dimensions across operating systems. Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, InDesign, Illustrator, web browsers, scanners, and print drivers commonly create PDF files. A PDF can contain multiple pages, vector paths, embedded fonts, raster images, transparency, annotations, forms, and interactive elements.

What the EPS format is

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a PostScript graphics format intended for placing artwork inside another document. It remains supported by older Adobe Illustrator versions, QuarkXPress, desktop-publishing applications, vinyl cutters, sign-making systems, and some PostScript print workflows.

EPS can retain vector paths that print at different sizes without geometric pixelation, making it suitable for logos, diagrams, illustrations, and cutting paths. It normally represents one page or one bounded illustration, and it has weaker support for transparency, annotations, forms, color-management features, and other modern PDF features. It is not a general replacement for a multipage PDF.

How to convert a PDF to EPS

Using Poppler

Poppler's pdftops is a direct command-line option for converting PDF page descriptions to PostScript and EPS.

1. Install Poppler for your operating system and open a terminal in the folder containing the PDF.
2. For a single-page PDF, run pdftops -eps input.pdf output.eps.
3. For a multipage PDF, convert only the required page because EPS normally contains one page: pdftops -eps -f 1 -l 1 input.pdf output.eps.

Replace 1 with the required page number. On Windows, the executable may be named pdftops.exe. Repeat the command with a different output filename for each page that must become an EPS file.

Using Ghostscript

Ghostscript can write EPS when Poppler is unavailable or when its PostScript rendering is preferable. Select a page explicitly:

gs -dSAFER -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dFirstPage=1 -dLastPage=1 -sDEVICE=eps2write -sOutputFile=output.eps input.pdf

Change -dFirstPage and -dLastPage to the same desired page number. Ghostscript may flatten transparency, substitute fonts, rasterize unsupported effects, or simplify PDF features that have no direct PostScript equivalent.

Using a graphics application

Adobe Illustrator can open a PDF page and save it with File → Save As → Illustrator EPS. Inkscape can import a PDF page and export EPS through File → Save As or File → Export, depending on the version and installed exporters. These applications allow paths, clipping masks, fonts, and page content to be corrected before export, but import results depend on how the source PDF was created.

Quality and compatibility limits

A scanned PDF does not become editable vector artwork through conversion. Its EPS contains a raster image, so quality remains limited by the scan's resolution. A PDF containing vector artwork may still produce imperfect EPS if it uses transparency, blend modes, live effects, complex clipping paths, unusual fonts, annotations, forms, embedded profiles, or advanced color-management features.

Open the result in the application that will receive it and check text, colors, clipping, transparency, line widths, and image resolution. Missing fonts can cause substitution; convert text to outlines in a graphics application only when editable text is no longer needed, and keep an original copy because outlining cannot be reversed.

Check the EPS bounding box after conversion. A wrong or oversized bounding box can add whitespace or crop artwork when the file is placed in page-layout software. For commercial printing or cutting, confirm the required EPS/PostScript level, RGB or CMYK color space, font policy, and resolution for embedded raster images.
