Typical uses include logos, icons, illustrations, diagrams, and other artwork that needs to stay sharp at any size.

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a widely supported vector graphics format used in publishing, print production, and professional design workflows. It is valued for its broad compatibility with desktop publishing software, RIP systems, and print services. Compared with SVGZ, EPS is older and less web-oriented, but it remains important in print and prepress environments.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable approach is to first decompress the SVGZ file into plain SVG, then convert that SVG to EPS using vector graphics software. Inkscape is one of the best tools for this task because it can open SVG and export EPS while preserving vector paths as much as possible.

1. Open the .svgz file in Inkscape. Inkscape usually recognizes SVGZ directly; if not, rename the file to .svgz or decompress it to .svg first.
2. Check the artwork for any unsupported features such as filters, masks, transparency, or embedded fonts.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, depending on your Inkscape version, and select EPS as the output format.
4. Save the file with an .eps extension, for example logo.eps.

If you prefer command-line conversion, you can use Inkscape directly after decompressing the file. For example, decompress image.svgz to image.svg, then run a conversion command supported by your Inkscape version to export EPS. This is useful for batch workflows and automation.

Another desktop option is Adobe Illustrator, which can open SVG/SVGZ files and save them as EPS through File → Save As. This may be preferable in professional print workflows where Illustrator is already part of the production process.

Notes on quality, compatibility, or limitations

SVGZ is vector-based, so in principle the conversion to EPS can preserve sharp lines and scalable shapes. However, EPS is an older format and does not support every modern SVG feature. Effects such as gradients, transparency, clipping, filters, and complex text handling may be flattened, simplified, or lost during conversion.

Fonts are a common issue. If the SVGZ uses fonts that are not available on the target system, text may reflow or be converted to outlines. For print reliability, it is often best to convert text to paths before exporting, if your workflow allows it.

Because EPS is less flexible than SVG, the result may not round-trip perfectly back into modern vector editors. If the artwork is intended for web or future editing, keep the original .svgz or .svg file as the master copy and use EPS only for delivery to systems that require it.
