What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format developed by Google for websites and applications. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, and typically produces smaller files than JPEG or PNG at comparable visual quality.

Web browsers, content-management systems, Android applications, GIMP, Photoshop, and automated image pipelines commonly create WEBP files. You may encounter one after downloading an image from a website or exporting graphics for web delivery.

What the EPS format is

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a graphics container used by older page-layout, illustration, and print-production software. It can contain vector paths, text, raster images, and PostScript instructions, together with a bounding box that defines the artwork area.

Vector EPS artwork scales without pixelation and can be edited in Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and Inkscape. An EPS made from a WEBP normally contains the original image as an embedded raster, so its quality remains limited by the WEBP's pixel dimensions.

How to convert WEBP to EPS

Using the online converter

1. Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .webp file and choose EPS as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .eps file.
4. Open the output in the target graphics or print application and check its dimensions, background, and appearance before sending it to production.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is suitable for a direct raster-to-EPS conversion when its WEBP and EPS format support is available:

magick -density 300 input.webp -background white -alpha remove -alpha off output.eps

The -density 300 setting defines the intended output resolution and physical size; it does not add detail to a low-resolution source. The background options flatten transparency because traditional EPS workflows do not reliably preserve WEBP alpha transparency. Omit those options only when the receiving application explicitly supports the generated transparency behavior.

Using Inkscape

1. Open Inkscape and choose File → Import.
2. Select input.webp, choose to embed the image rather than link it, and confirm the import.
3. Adjust the page to the artwork if necessary so the EPS bounding box does not include unwanted whitespace.
4. Choose File → Save a Copy, select Encapsulated PostScript, and save as output.eps.

Inkscape preserves the imported WEBP as a bitmap unless you trace it. Automatic tracing can create editable paths, but it changes the artwork and is unsuitable for photographs or detailed images.

Quality and compatibility limitations

WEBP lossy compression artifacts remain in the EPS, and enlarging the EPS cannot restore lost pixels. Use the highest-resolution source available; for print, calculate the effective resolution at the final physical size, with 300 ppi commonly used for general raster printing.

EPS has limited support for transparency, animation, modern color management, and some WEBP features. Animated WEBP files produce a static EPS, normally using one frame. If a printer requires CMYK, convert the image to the specified CMYK profile before or during export and verify the result in a preflight application; changing RGB to CMYK without the printer's profile can alter colors.
