What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google and commonly created by web browsers, website optimization tools, screenshot utilities, and image editors. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, so it is frequently encountered when downloading images from websites. Many desktop editors and browsers open WEBP directly, but TI-Nspire software may require the image to be converted to a supported format such as PNG or JPEG before insertion.

What the TNS format is

TNS is the document format used by Texas Instruments TI-Nspire software and calculators. A TNS file can contain calculation pages, graphs, notes, programs, and imported images. It is a structured document container rather than a normal bitmap image, so a WEBP-to-TNS conversion produces a TI-Nspire document with the graphic placed on a page.

TNS is useful when the image must be opened on a TI-Nspire CX calculator, TI-Nspire Student Software, or TI-Nspire Computer Link. The format preserves the surrounding TI-Nspire document structure, but it does not provide general-purpose image compatibility.

How to actually convert WEBP to TNS

For a manual conversion with more control over the intermediate image:

1. Convert the WEBP to PNG. ImageMagick can do this with magick image.webp image.png. Use PNG when the source has transparency or when you want to avoid another lossy compression step.
2. Open TI-Nspire Student Software or TI-Nspire Computer Link and create a new document.
3. Insert the converted image using Insert → Image, then select image.png or image.jpg.
4. Resize or position the image on the TI-Nspire page as needed.
5. Save the document with File → Save As and keep the .tns extension, for example image.tns.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A lossless WEBP converted to PNG can retain its pixel data, while a lossy WEBP already contains compression artifacts that cannot be removed. Animated WEBP files generally become a single static image; select or extract the required frame before importing it. Transparency may be preserved through PNG but can be flattened or displayed differently by TI-Nspire software.

The resulting TNS file may open only in compatible TI-Nspire software or on supported calculators. If the calculator rejects the file, open and resave it with the current TI-Nspire desktop software, then transfer it using TI-Nspire Computer Link. Large images may be scaled, consume document storage, or render slowly, so resize them to the calculator's intended viewing area before embedding.
