What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for websites and applications. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation; common files use .webp. Browsers, Android applications, content-management systems, and image tools such as Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, and FFmpeg create or export WEBP files.

A WEBP stores pixels rather than paths. Enlarging it beyond its source resolution can reveal compression artifacts or blur, and its pixels cannot be edited as individual Illustrator shapes without vectorization.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native graphics format. It stores Illustrator artwork, including vector paths, shapes, text, gradients, effects, placed raster images, and document settings. AI is used for logos, illustrations, packaging, signage, and print production because vector objects can be edited and scaled without pixelation.

An AI file can contain an embedded WEBP-derived raster image, but that does not make the image vector. Editable vector output requires tracing or manually redrawing the source.

How to actually convert WEBP to AI

Using the online converter

1. Open the free converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
2. Upload the .webp file and choose AI as the output format.
3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .ai file.
4. Open the result in Adobe Illustrator and check whether the image is embedded, linked, or converted into paths.

This method is suitable when you need an AI-container file for delivery or compatibility. It generally preserves the source as a raster image rather than producing independently editable vector shapes.

Using Adobe Illustrator for editable vectors

1. Open the WEBP directly in Illustrator if your installed version supports it. If it does not, convert it to PNG with an image editor, then use File → Place to insert the PNG.
2. Select the placed image and open Window → Image Trace.
3. Choose a preset such as Black and White Logo, 3 Colors, or High Fidelity Photo. Adjust Threshold, Colors, Paths, Corners, and Noise for the source.
4. Click Trace, then click Expand in the Properties or Control panel to convert the trace into paths.
5. Remove the original placed image if it is no longer needed, inspect the paths, and save with File → Save As, choosing Adobe Illustrator (*.AI).

For a simple logo, manually redraw important curves with the Pen tool instead of accepting an overly complex automatic trace. For photographs, tracing produces many paths and usually gives a worse result than keeping the image rasterized inside the AI file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Lossy WEBP compression permanently discards image detail before conversion; saving it as AI cannot restore that detail. Use the original lossless or highest-resolution source when the file will be printed.

Transparency may be preserved when the converter and Illustrator support the WEBP alpha channel, but inspect transparent edges for halos caused by premultiplied backgrounds. Linked images can become unavailable when the AI file is moved, so embed the image when portability is required.

AI compatibility depends on the Illustrator version and the features used. When sending the file to another application, also export a PDF or SVG if the artwork consists of vectors; retain the AI file as the editable master.
