Archived FreeHand artwork may need conversion when a current designer, printer, or client requires an editable Adobe Illustrator file. Converting FH9 to AI also avoids relying on obsolete FreeHand installations, but the exported artwork must be checked for missing fonts, links, and unsupported effects.

What the FH9 format is

.fh9 is the native document format used by Macromedia FreeHand 9, a legacy vector-illustration and page-layout application. FH9 files contain artwork such as logos, diagrams, maps, signage, and print layouts, and are commonly found in archived agency and publishing projects.

FH9 is proprietary and is not the same as an Illustrator file. Renaming .fh9 to .ai does not convert it, and current graphics applications generally do not open FH9 directly.

What the AI format is

.ai is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format for editable vector paths, layers, text, clipping masks, gradients, and placed raster images. It is suitable when the recipient uses Illustrator or a contemporary vector and prepress workflow.

AI files can preserve artwork at any scale, but the result depends on the Illustrator compatibility level selected during export and on the FreeHand features used. An AI file exported by FreeHand may need to be opened and resaved in a current Illustrator version before it behaves like a current native document.

How to convert FH9 to AI

FreeHand provides the most controllable route when the original application is available.

1. Make a backup copy of the original .fh9 file and open the copy in FreeHand 9, FreeHand 10, or FreeHand MX. A legacy computer, compatible operating-system installation, or virtual machine may be necessary.
2. Check the document before export. Confirm page size, bleed, layers, colors, overprints, linked graphics, transparency, clipping paths, and text appearance. Install the original fonts where licensing permits.
3. Choose File → Export, select Adobe Illustrator, and export an .ai file. If FreeHand offers Illustrator compatibility versions, choose the lowest version that supports the required artwork; Illustrator 7 or 8 is often a practical compatibility choice.
4. Open the exported file in Adobe Illustrator and inspect every page or artboard at high zoom. Check text reflow, strokes, gradients, masks, transparency, overprints, spot colors, and placed images.
5. Save the verified result with File → Save As or File → Save a Copy in the current Illustrator format. Retain the original FH9 file and the first exported AI file separately.

If direct AI export is unavailable or produces a damaged result, export from FreeHand to EPS, open the EPS in Illustrator, inspect it, and save it as AI. EPS is a vector interchange format, but this fallback can convert text and complex objects into less-editable content and may not preserve FreeHand-specific features.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Fonts: Missing or substituted fonts can reflow text. Preserve the live text only when the required fonts are available; otherwise, outline a duplicate of the text after confirming its appearance.
• Effects: Transparency, blends, custom brushes, gradients, spot colors, overprints, and complex clipping masks may be flattened, altered, or split into multiple objects.
• Images: Linked raster graphics may not be embedded in the exported AI file. Keep the source images with the project and relink missing files in Illustrator.
• Print settings: Recheck dimensions, bleed, CMYK or spot-color definitions, overprint behavior, image resolution, and color profiles before delivery to a printer.
• Editability: The conversion can preserve the visible design while losing FreeHand-specific editability. Keep the FH9 source as the archival master and do not overwrite it.
