Free online FH9 to PNG converter

A browser, office document, or image editor may require a PNG instead of an archived FreeHand drawing. Converting the file makes the artwork easier to share and view, but changes editable vector content into a fixed-resolution bitmap.

What the FH9 format is

.fh9 is the native document format used by Macromedia FreeHand 9, a vector-illustration and page-design application. It can contain paths, text, fills, strokes, gradients, placed images, and page settings rather than one finished bitmap. FH9 files commonly remain in archives from design studios, print shops, and older Windows or macOS systems.

FreeHand 9, later FreeHand versions, and FreeHand MX can generally open FH9 documents. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every object: missing fonts, linked images, blends, transparency, and other legacy effects may be altered or omitted. Current versions of Illustrator and other graphics applications may not open FH9 files directly, so test the specific application and file before relying on it.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format supported by web browsers, office software, image editors, and most operating systems. Its lossless compression preserves sharp edges and solid colors without JPEG-style compression artifacts, and PNG can store transparent backgrounds through an alpha channel.

PNG works well for screen previews, documentation, presentations, and web content. It is not an editable replacement for FH9: it does not retain vector paths, layers, FreeHand objects, or editable text, and enlarging it beyond its exported pixel dimensions reduces sharpness.

How to convert FH9 to PNG

Using FreeHand

1. Open the file in Macromedia FreeHand 9, a compatible later release, or FreeHand MX.
2. Resolve missing-font warnings and confirm that linked images are available. Check the page size, artwork position, and objects that extend beyond the intended export area.
3. Choose File → Export.
4. Select PNG as the format, enter an output filename, and continue to the PNG export settings.
5. Choose the page or selected artwork as the export area. Set the required pixel dimensions or resolution and enable a transparent background when the destination supports transparency.
6. Export the file and inspect the resulting .png at 100% scale for missing fonts, clipped artwork, color changes, and incorrect transparency.

If the FH9 document contains multiple pages, export each required page separately unless the FreeHand version provides a suitable multi-page export option; a standard PNG file represents one raster image.

Using the built-in converter

Quality and compatibility limits

Choose output dimensions for the final use. Screen graphics commonly need about 96–150 pixels per inch when a resolution setting is required; print placement often needs 300 pixels per inch or more at the final physical size. A large page exported at print resolution can create a very large PNG.

Unavailable fonts can reflow text or substitute different letterforms. Missing linked graphics can leave blank or incomplete areas. FreeHand effects may also render differently in another reader or converter, so compare the PNG with the original before discarding any source assets.
