What the NRW format is

NRW is Nikon’s raw image format for selected COOLPIX cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data, along with camera metadata, so exposure, white balance, and some other settings can be adjusted during raw development. NRW files are commonly created by cameras such as the COOLPIX P6000 and other models that offer a raw capture mode.

NRW is not a finished bitmap image: applications must decode and develop it before displaying or exporting the photograph. Nikon NX Studio supports Nikon raw files, while applications such as darktable and RawTherapee may support NRW depending on the camera model and installed raw-decoding libraries.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format supported by web browsers, image editors, operating systems, and office software. It is suitable for screenshots, graphics, diagrams, and photographs that need lossless encoding or transparency. PNG usually produces larger files than JPEG for photographs, and it does not preserve the editable sensor data contained in an NRW file.

How to actually convert NRW to PNG

Using Nikon NX Studio

1. Install and open Nikon NX Studio, then import or browse to the NRW file.
2. Open the photograph and adjust exposure, white balance, picture controls, and other raw-development settings as needed.
3. Choose File → Export.
4. Select PNG as the output format, choose the destination folder, and start the export.

NX Studio is the most appropriate choice when the NRW file came from a Nikon camera because it is designed for Nikon raw data and camera-specific metadata.

Using a desktop raw processor

In darktable or RawTherapee, open the NRW file, apply the required development settings, and use the application’s export or queue function. Select PNG as the output format, retain the original pixel dimensions, and use 8-bit or 16-bit output according to the application’s available options. Exporting to 16-bit PNG preserves more tonal precision for later editing, but creates a larger file.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG does not use photographic JPEG-style compression, but its files can still be substantially larger than JPEG files. Use PNG when lossless output is required; use JPEG instead when compact photographic files are more important. Some metadata, including Nikon-specific raw settings, may not transfer to PNG, and embedded color profiles may vary by converter.
