Free online FH11 to PNG converter

PNG is needed when an FH11 drawing must be viewed or placed in software that cannot open legacy FreeHand documents. The conversion creates a fixed raster image for sharing, web use, or archiving, but it removes the document's independently editable vector objects.

What the FH11 format is

.fh11 is the native document format used by Macromedia FreeHand 11, also called FreeHand MX. It can contain vector paths, text, fills, strokes, layers, multiple pages, and linked or embedded raster graphics. FH11 files are mainly found in older graphic-design, illustration, and print-production archives.

FH11 is not a general-purpose image format. Most current viewers, browsers, office applications, and design programs do not open it directly, and FreeHand 11 may be difficult to install on modern operating systems because it is discontinued legacy software.

What PNG provides

PNG is a raster format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office software, and image editors. It uses lossless compression, so it preserves sharp edges and flat colors without JPEG-style compression artifacts. PNG also supports an alpha channel for transparent backgrounds.

A PNG contains pixels rather than FreeHand objects. Its width and height are fixed when exported, and paths, text objects, layers, and editability are not retained. PNG is suitable for logos, diagrams, screenshots, and illustrations; JPEG is usually smaller for photographic content.

How to convert an FH11 file

Using FreeHand 11 or FreeHand MX

1. Open the file in Macromedia FreeHand 11 or FreeHand MX. If it fails to open, verify that it is an FH11 document and restore any missing linked images and fonts.
2. Choose File → Export.
3. Select PNG or Portable Network Graphics, enter an output filename ending in .png, and choose the destination folder.
4. In the export options, select the required page, selection, or artwork area. Set the pixel dimensions or resolution before exporting; around 96–150 dpi is generally sufficient for screen use, while around 300 dpi is appropriate when the resulting image will be printed at its intended physical size.
5. Choose a transparent background when the PNG will be placed over another color, or specify a solid background when transparency is not wanted.
6. Export the file and inspect the PNG for cropping, missing fonts, transparent areas, linked images, and jagged edges.

When FreeHand is unavailable

If FreeHand can open the document on any available system, exporting to PDF or EPS first provides an intermediate format that many desktop graphics and PDF applications can rasterize. For a PDF, Poppler's pdftoppm command can create a 300-dpi PNG:

This produces numbered files such as output-1.png for PDF pages. PDF or EPS conversion can alter transparency, fonts, clipping paths, and linked graphics, so inspect the intermediate file before rasterizing it. Current Inkscape and LibreOffice releases generally do not open FH11 directly and should not be treated as dependable first-step converters.

Quality and compatibility limits

Rasterization permanently removes vector editability. Export at the final required pixel dimensions or larger; enlarging a small PNG later cannot restore detail and usually softens text and edges. A higher dpi value only helps when it produces more pixels for the intended output size.

Font substitution, missing linked files, unsupported effects, clipping paths, and color-management differences can change the appearance when an old document is opened or converted on another system. FreeHand documents containing several pages may export only the active page or may require separate exports, depending on the selected export area and software version. Preserve the original FH11 file and, when possible, an additional PDF or EPS copy if future vector access may be required.
