Free online FH11 to AI converter

An FH11 file may need conversion when a current Adobe Illustrator workflow or print provider requires editable AI artwork. Converting it also provides a usable copy for sharing and continued vector editing after FreeHand is no longer available.

What the FH11 format is

FH11 is the native document format of Macromedia FreeHand 11, also called FreeHand MX. It stores vector paths, text, fills, strokes, layers, symbols, gradients, and references to placed bitmap images. FH11 files are mainly found in legacy design-agency, publishing, and print-production archives.

FreeHand is discontinued, and current graphics applications may not open FH11 reliably. Fonts and linked images may be external to the document, so preserve the original file together with its fonts, linked artwork, and project folders.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native document format. It can retain editable paths, layers, text, gradients, transparency, clipping masks, and Illustrator-specific effects. Illustrator can optionally save PDF-compatible content inside an AI file for previewing or opening in software that supports the embedded PDF portion.

AI is appropriate when the recipient edits in Illustrator or specifically requests Illustrator artwork. It is not automatically smaller than FH11, and an AI file saved for an older Illustrator version may lose features supported by newer versions.

How to convert FH11 to AI

Using FreeHand 11

1. Make a backup of the original .fh11 file and collect its linked images and required fonts.
2. Open the file in FreeHand 11 with File → Open. Resolve missing-font and missing-link warnings before exporting.
3. Inspect page dimensions, layers, text, clipping paths, gradients, transparency, placed images, and spot colors. Re-link external images if necessary.
4. Choose File → Export, select Adobe Illustrator or .ai, and choose the newest Illustrator export version that the recipient can open. The exact version choices depend on the FreeHand installation.
5. Open the exported file in the target Illustrator version and check every page, text object, image, color, and effect. Save or resave it as the required AI version with File → Save As.

Exporting from the original FreeHand application is usually the most reliable desktop method because it interprets the document's native objects before writing Illustrator data.

Using legacy Illustrator or the built-in converter

Some older Adobe Illustrator releases can import FreeHand files through an Adobe-provided FreeHand import script, but that script was intended for specific legacy Illustrator versions, notably CS4 and CS5, and is not a dependable solution for current releases. If an eligible Illustrator installation is available, install the script according to Adobe's instructions, open the FH11 file, then use File → Save As and select Adobe Illustrator (*.AI). Test the result rather than assuming that all FreeHand effects transferred.

Quality and compatibility limits

FH11 and AI are proprietary formats, so conversion is not guaranteed to be lossless. FreeHand blends, transparency effects, pattern fills, symbols, complex clipping groups, and lens effects may be rewritten, expanded, rasterized, or omitted. Compare the converted artwork with a PDF or high-resolution image rendered from the original.

Missing fonts can cause substitution, text reflow, or changed line breaks. Keep an editable version with live text, and outline a duplicate only when the recipient permits it; outlining prevents font substitution but removes text editing and may increase file complexity.

Verify linked images, image resolution, page size, CMYK or RGB mode, document profiles, and spot-color names separately. Legacy applications may map color profiles or spot colors differently. If a direct conversion opens incorrectly, export from FreeHand using an older Illustrator format, reopen that file in Illustrator, and save a new AI copy for the target version.
