What the FH11 format is

.fh11 is the native document format used by Macromedia FreeHand 11, a discontinued vector-illustration and page-layout application. Legacy designers, publishers, and organizations with archived FreeHand projects may still have FH11 files containing paths, text, fills, strokes, layers, placed images, and multiple pages.

FH11 is a structured, editable design document rather than an image file. Current operating systems and graphics applications may not open it correctly, and renaming drawing.fh11 to drawing.jpg does not convert the contents.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a raster format supported by web browsers, phones, office software, image viewers, and most image editors. It normally produces a much smaller and more widely compatible file than an editable FreeHand document.

JPEG uses lossy compression. It preserves a rendered appearance, not FreeHand paths, layers, text objects, or page structure, so the result cannot be edited like the source. Compression is generally acceptable for detailed artwork and photographs but can blur small text and create halos around sharp lines.

How to convert an FH11 file

Quality and compatibility limits

Set the pixel dimensions for the intended use rather than relying only on the source document’s page size. For print output, use approximately 300 dpi at the final physical size; screen images usually need fewer pixels, depending on their display size. Higher JPEG quality reduces visible artifacts but increases file size.

JPEG has no transparency channel, so transparent areas are rendered against a background, commonly white. Use PNG instead when transparency or lossless edges are required.

For logos, diagrams, screenshots, and text-heavy layouts, PNG or PDF can preserve sharp edges better than JPEG. Keep the original FH11 file because conversion rasterizes the artwork and permanently removes its editable vector structure.
