Some photo editors, web applications, and image viewers require a standard raster image instead of a camera raw file. PNG is also easier to share when lossless output, transparency, or broad software compatibility matters.

What the DNG format is

DNG (Digital Negative) is Adobe’s publicly documented camera raw format. Photographers, smartphones, some cameras, and scanning applications use it to store minimally processed sensor data together with metadata. Adobe Lightroom, Camera Raw, Photoshop, darktable, and RawTherapee can process DNG files.

A DNG is generally not a finished image. Its data may require demosaicing, white-balance adjustment, exposure processing, and color rendering before it becomes a viewable raster image. DNG can use lossless or lossy compression, and some files are linear DNGs that already contain rendered pixel data; it should not automatically be described as lossless.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a losslessly compressed raster format for finished images. It supports grayscale and RGB images, 8-bit or 16-bit channels, and an alpha channel for transparency.

PNG suits screenshots, diagrams, interface graphics, web assets, and images that must avoid JPEG compression artifacts. It usually produces larger files than JPEG for photographs, and it does not preserve raw sensor data, camera adjustments, or the full nondestructive editing model of a DNG.

How to convert a DNG file to PNG

Conversion renders the raw data with a chosen processor and export profile; changing .dng to .png in the filename does not convert the image.

Using 101convert.com

Use a desktop application instead for confidential images or when you need precise control over raw development, color space, bit depth, metadata, and batch output.

Using darktable

1. Import the DNG into darktable and open it in the darkroom.
2. Adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, sharpening, and color as required.
3. Return to the lighttable, select the image, and choose Export selected.
4. Set File format to PNG, choose the destination, and select the available bit depth and other output settings.
5. Click Export and check the resulting .png file in an image viewer.

Using Adobe Lightroom classic

1. Import the DNG into Lightroom Classic and apply any required Develop adjustments.
2. Select the image and choose File → Export.
3. Under File Settings, set Image Format to PNG.
4. Choose the output color space, 8-bit or 16-bit depth where available, destination, and filename settings.
5. Select Export.

Lightroom, darktable, and similar raw processors can export multiple selected files, making them more suitable than a basic image viewer for batch conversion. Photoshop can also open a DNG and use File → Save a Copy or its PNG export command, depending on the version.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Keep the original DNG as the archival master. PNG contains rendered pixels and cannot retain the original raw sensor data.
• Choose 16-bit PNG when the image will undergo further editing or contains smooth gradients; choose 8-bit PNG for ordinary web graphics and wider compatibility.
• PNG compression is lossless after rendering, but the selected white balance, exposure, demosaicing, color profile, sharpening, and bit depth determine the visible result.
• Different raw processors can render the same DNG differently, especially when camera profiles or proprietary adjustment metadata are involved. Review the exported exposure, colors, and profile in the target application.
• PNG can store transparency, but converting a normal DNG does not create meaningful transparent areas unless the source or editing workflow supplies an alpha channel.
• Some metadata and editing instructions may be omitted or translated during export, so retain the DNG and any sidecar files if future re-editing matters.
