Many phones, browsers, messaging apps, and publishing systems accept JPG more reliably than DNG. Exporting a JPG creates a smaller, shareable copy while leaving the original DNG available for later raw editing.

What the DNG format is

DNG, or Digital Negative, is Adobe's openly documented raw-image format. Photographers use it in Adobe Lightroom, Camera Raw, and other raw processors; some cameras, phones, and scanning applications can also save DNG files directly.

A DNG usually stores minimally processed camera-sensor data plus metadata, although DNG files can also contain compressed, linear, or otherwise processed image data. A raw processor normally renders the file by applying demosaicing, exposure, white balance, color, highlight, sharpening, and noise-reduction settings. Renaming .dng to .jpg does not perform this rendering or conversion.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is an 8-bit-per-channel image format supported by web browsers, operating systems, printers, phones, social networks, and most image editors. Its lossy compression produces much smaller files than raw images, making JPG suitable for email, web publishing, printing, and general sharing.

A JPG stores the rendered appearance at export time rather than the original raw editing data. Repeatedly opening and saving it can introduce additional compression loss, so retain the DNG when you may need to change exposure, white balance, highlights, or other raw settings.

Using Lightroom classic

1. Import the DNG into Lightroom Classic and select it in the Library or Develop module.

5. Optionally set a maximum pixel dimension, choose the destination folder, and select Export.

Using Camera Raw and Photoshop

1. Open the DNG in Photoshop so Adobe Camera Raw can render it.
2. Adjust exposure, white balance, crop, and other raw settings.
3. Select Save Image in Camera Raw, choose JPEG, set the quality and color space, and save the file.

For batch processing in Photoshop, use File → Scripts → Image Processor, select the source files, enable Save as JPEG, and set the quality and destination.

Using a desktop raw processor

Applications such as darktable can convert DNG files without sending them to a remote service. Import the files, adjust them if necessary, open the export function, choose JPEG as the output format, set sRGB and the desired quality, then export. Menu names vary between versions.

Command-line tools such as ImageMagick are not reliable for every DNG because raw decoding depends on the installed delegates and build. If an ImageMagick command reports an unsupported format or missing delegate, render the files with Lightroom, Camera Raw, darktable, or another DNG-capable raw processor first instead of treating the error as a JPG conversion problem.

Quality and compatibility limits

Exporting creates a new rendered image; it does not preserve the DNG's raw flexibility. To change raw settings later, edit the DNG and export another JPG.

Use sRGB unless the destination explicitly supports a wider color space. Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB can appear dull or incorrectly interpreted in applications with limited color-management support.

Quality settings near 85–95 generally reduce file size with little visible loss, while 100 produces a larger file and may provide only a small visual improvement. The best setting depends on the image and its intended use.

Review the result for clipped highlights, incorrect white balance, color shifts, missing embedded profiles, unexpected cropping, and reduced dimensions. Metadata behavior varies by application: GPS coordinates, copyright data, camera information, and editing metadata may be copied, removed, or rewritten during export.
