Why convert DNG to CR2?

Converting DNG to CR2 is uncommon, as DNG is typically used for archiving or editing, while CR2 is specific to Canon cameras. However, some workflows or software may require CR2 files for compatibility or camera-specific processing.

How to convert DNG to CR2

Direct conversion from DNG to CR2 is not widely supported, as CR2 is a proprietary format. Most software, including Adobe products, allows conversion from CR2 to DNG, but not the reverse. If you need to use a DNG file in a workflow that requires CR2, consider these alternatives:

• Check camera compatibility: Some Canon cameras can embed the original raw file in the DNG during conversion. If you have the original CR2 embedded, you can extract it using Adobe DNG Converter.
• Export as TIFF or JPEG: Use software like Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop to open the DNG and export it as a high-quality TIFF or JPEG, which can then be used in most workflows.

Recommended software for handling DNG and CR2 files

• Adobe Lightroom: Import your DNG file, then use File → Export to save as TIFF or JPEG.
• Adobe Photoshop: Open the DNG, then use File → Save As to export in a different format.
• RawTherapee: A free, open-source raw editor that supports DNG and can export to TIFF or JPEG.

Important notes

There is currently no direct, lossless way to convert DNG back to CR2. If you require a CR2 file, always keep your original camera raw files. For most workflows, exporting to TIFF from DNG preserves the highest quality for further editing or printing.
