How to convert tif to jpg file

A JPG copy is useful when a website, phone, office application, or image editor does not accept TIFF files, or when a smaller file is easier to share. The conversion changes TIFF storage into JPEG's lossy compression, so retain the original TIFF for archival or future editing.

What the TIF format is

TIF and TIFF are filename extensions for Tagged Image File Format. TIFF is a tagged image container used by scanners, multifunction printers, publishing and printing systems, archives, medical-imaging workflows, and applications such as Adobe Photoshop and GIMP.

TIFF can store uncompressed or compressed image data, including lossless compression, high bit depths, RGB or CMYK color, metadata, alpha transparency, and multiple pages. These capabilities make it suitable for masters and scans, but TIFF files are often much larger and less widely accepted than JPG files. Support for particular TIFF features varies between applications.

What JPG is

JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. JPEG uses lossy compression designed primarily for photographs and other continuous-tone images, producing files that are usually much smaller than uncompressed or losslessly compressed TIFF files.

JPG is widely supported by web browsers, phones, email systems, office software, social platforms, and consumer image viewers. It is less suitable for text-heavy scans, line art, screenshots, repeated editing, and transparent graphics. JPEG has no alpha-transparency channel, so transparent TIFF areas must be filled with a color during conversion.

How to convert a TIF file

For a single file without installing software, use the free converter on 101convert.com: upload the TIF file, select JPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Open the downloaded file and check its dimensions, colors, page content, and readability before deleting the original. Do not upload confidential scans to an online tool; use local software for sensitive files.

For local conversion, ImageMagick works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. After installation, run:

magick input.tif -quality 90 output.jpg

The -quality 90 value is a practical starting point for photographs. Use a new output filename so the TIFF remains unchanged. A multi-page TIFF must be exported as one JPG per page:

magick input.tif -quality 90 page-%03d.jpg

This produces files such as page-000.jpg and page-001.jpg. To replace transparency with a white background, use:

magick input.tif -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -quality 90 output.jpg

In GIMP, open File → Open, select the TIFF, then choose File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .jpg, select Export, set the JPEG quality, and confirm. In Photoshop, use File → Save a Copy or File → Export → Export As, select JPG, choose the quality, and export. Other image editors use equivalent open-and-export commands.

Quality and compatibility limits

JPEG conversion discards image information. A quality setting around 85–95 usually suits photographs; lower settings reduce size but can produce blocking, ringing, and blurred edges. Re-saving a JPG applies further lossy compression, so edit the TIFF or another lossless master and export to JPG once.

Many TIFF files contain 16-bit or higher-per-channel data, while common JPEG workflows use 8 bits per channel. Conversion can therefore reduce tonal precision even when the image looks unchanged. CMYK JPEG is supported by some software, but RGB is more compatible with browsers, phones, and general-purpose applications; verify color after conversion if the TIFF is intended for print.

Resolution metadata such as DPI does not add image detail. Pixel dimensions determine the available detail, while DPI mainly affects how software interprets physical print size. Check the required pixel dimensions and resolution before exporting for print.

A multi-page TIFF cannot remain a multi-page JPG: each JPG contains one image, so a multi-page source requires separate output files. Inspect page count, image dimensions, color mode, transparency replacement, and text readability after conversion.
