A program, upload system, or file-sharing workflow may require the .tiff extension even when a scanner or editor produced .tif. Because both extensions identify the same Tagged Image File Format, renaming the file usually satisfies that requirement without rewriting its image data.

What the TIF format is

TIF is the three-letter filename extension commonly used for TIFF raster images. Scanners, cameras, desktop-publishing software, image editors, geographic-information systems, and document-management systems use these files for scans, photographs, maps, page images, and other high-resolution graphics.

TIFF can store bilevel, grayscale, RGB, and CMYK images; resolution metadata; color profiles; and, depending on the file and application, multiple pages, transparency data, or application-specific layers. It supports uncompressed data and compression methods including LZW, ZIP, PackBits, and JPEG. TIFF is an extensible format, so two files with the same extension can contain structures that different applications do not support equally.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is the same graphics format represented by the longer .tiff extension. The extension spelling does not provide higher resolution, better color, different compression, or better image quality. The longer form is sometimes required by an application, print workflow, archive, or asset-management system, while other software accepts either form.

TIFF is suitable for editing, printing, scanning, and archival workflows because it can preserve high bit depths, resolution information, and lossless compression. Its files are often larger than JPEG or web-oriented formats, and TIFF features such as multiple pages, unusual compression, private metadata, or application-specific layers may not open correctly in every program.

How to rename TIF as TIFF

Keep a backup of the original file if it is important.
Show filename extensions in the operating system’s file manager. On Windows, enable View → Show → File name extensions in File Explorer.
Rename scan.tif to scan.tiff, changing only the extension after the final dot.
Accept the warning about changing the file extension, then open the renamed file in the target application.

This changes the filename only. The pixels, compression, metadata, color profile, pages, and other TIFF structures remain byte-for-byte unchanged. Do not rename a file whose contents are not actually TIFF data; changing an extension does not convert another image format.

How to rewrite the file

Use an image application when the destination program rejects the original TIFF structure, or when you need to change compression, color mode, resolution, or metadata. Open the file in GIMP, IrfanView, XnView MP, Adobe Photoshop, or similar software, then choose File → Save As or File → Export. Select TIFF as the format and save with a filename ending in .tiff.

Check the export settings before saving. LZW, ZIP, and PackBits are generally lossless; JPEG compression inside a TIFF is lossy. Rewriting can change the file size, discard unsupported tags or embedded profiles, flatten application-specific layers, or alter multi-page content. Keep the original when preservation of those features matters.

How to convert from the command line

ImageMagick can create a new TIFF when a simple rename is not enough:

magick input.tif -compress LZW output.tiff

Use -compress ZIP for lossless ZIP compression or -compress None for an uncompressed output. ImageMagick decodes and rewrites the image, so it can alter metadata, unsupported structures, and sometimes color handling. For an extension-only change, rename the file instead.

Online conversion
