A TIF image may need conversion when a web, illustration, or publishing workflow accepts compressed SVG files instead. The result can reduce transfer size, but converting a raster TIF does not automatically create editable vector artwork.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster graphics format designed to preserve image data with little or no quality loss. Scanners, cameras, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, desktop-publishing software, and imaging systems commonly create TIF files. They are used for scanned documents, photographs, print production, maps, and other images where resolution, color depth, or lossless storage matters.

A TIF stores pixels rather than geometric paths. Its file may contain RGB, CMYK, grayscale, or monochrome data, multiple pages, alpha transparency, metadata, and compression such as LZW, ZIP, or JPEG.

What the SVGZ format is

SVGZ is a gzip-compressed SVG file. SVG stores graphics as XML descriptions of paths, shapes, text, gradients, and images; SVGZ applies gzip compression to that XML and normally uses the .svgz extension. Browsers and vector editors can display SVGZ when they support the format and receive the correct image/svg+xml content type.

SVGZ is useful for reducing the size of complex vector drawings used on websites, in diagrams, and in illustration workflows. Compression benefits path-heavy SVG documents more than documents containing a large embedded bitmap.

How to actually convert TIF to SVGZ

Using Inkscape

  1. Install and open Inkscape, then choose File → Import and select the TIF file.
  2. In the import dialog, keep the default embedded-image option if the SVGZ must remain self-contained. Confirm the import.
  3. For a simple format conversion, choose File → Save As, select SVGZ as the file type, and save the file.
  4. For editable vector artwork, select the imported image and choose Path → Trace Bitmap. Adjust the brightness cutoff, edge detection, or color settings, preview the result, and apply the trace.
  5. Move or delete the original TIF, verify the traced paths, then use File → Save As and choose SVGZ.

The direct import-and-save method places the TIF inside an SVG container; it does not convert pixels into paths. Tracing creates vector paths but can change fine detail, colors, gradients, and photographic content.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the TIF, choose SVGZ as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Use a desktop application instead for confidential images, multi-page TIFFs, or tracing settings that require manual control.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

SVGZ cannot preserve a TIF's multi-page structure as a single ordinary SVG drawing. A multi-page TIFF may need to be split into separate files, and some applications import only the first page.

If the TIF is embedded unchanged, its raster resolution remains the limiting factor when the SVGZ is enlarged. If it is traced, the output becomes scalable but may contain many nodes and become difficult to edit. Photographs and textured scans usually work better as embedded raster images or as optimized JPEG/PNG files than as traced paths.

For web delivery, configure the server to serve SVGZ as image/svg+xml. Test the file in the target browser or editor because older applications may recognize .svg but not compressed .svgz. Inspect the saved file with a text editor or archive tool only after decompression; SVGZ is gzip data, not plain XML.
