A mapping, design, or web-publishing workflow may require scalable SVG graphics instead of a fixed-resolution JPEG. SVGZ provides that SVG structure in a gzip-compressed file, while conversion can also reduce transfer size when the artwork is suitable for vectorization.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy raster image format that stores color information as a grid of pixels. Its compression discards some visual detail to reduce file size, which makes it common for digital-camera and phone photos, scanned photographs, websites, email attachments, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and other image editors.

A JPEG contains no native vector paths, scalable shapes, or editable SVG objects. Enlarging it exposes pixels, and converting it cannot restore detail already removed by JPEG compression.

What the SVGZ format is

SVGZ, normally identified by .svgz, is an SVG file compressed with gzip. The underlying SVG is XML that can contain vector paths, shapes, text, gradients, styles, and optionally embedded raster images. Gzip reduces the XML representation without changing the vector coordinates or artwork.

SVG is appropriate for logos, icons, diagrams, maps, and illustrations that must scale without pixelation. SVGZ can be substantially smaller than the equivalent uncompressed SVG, but compression does not turn a photograph into vector artwork. An SVGZ that contains an embedded JPEG still contains raster content with the JPEG's resolution limits.

How to convert JPEG to SVGZ

Using Inkscape

1. Open Inkscape and use File → Import to place the .jpg or .jpeg file on the canvas.
2. Select the imported image and open Path → Trace Bitmap. Use a single scan with a brightness cutoff for black-and-white artwork, or multiple scans with color quantization for a limited-color illustration.
3. Apply the trace, move the generated paths away from the original image, and delete the JPEG if it is no longer needed.
4. Inspect the paths at high zoom. Remove tracing artifacts and unnecessary nodes, then correct fills, strokes, and overlaps manually.
5. Use File → Save As and select an SVGZ or compressed SVG file type available in your Inkscape version. If the dialog offers only compressed plain SVG, save with the .svgz extension and verify that the result is gzip-compressed SVG rather than an ordinary SVG merely renamed.

Inkscape gives better control than automatic tracing because its threshold, color-count, path-editing, and node-simplification settings can be adjusted before compression.

• Use a sharp, high-resolution source, remove noise before tracing, restrict the color count, and simplify nodes afterward. These steps reduce artifacts and may reduce the SVGZ file size.
• SVGZ compression does not improve image quality, provide encryption, or create infinite resolution for embedded JPEG data.
• Browsers generally display SVGZ when the server supplies the correct image/svg+xml MIME type and handles gzip-compressed SVG correctly. Some desktop editors, upload systems, and older applications accept .svg but reject .svgz; keep an uncompressed SVG copy or decompress the file when required.
