Free online AI to SVGZ converter

SVGZ is needed when a web server, viewer, mapping tool, or asset pipeline accepts compressed SVG but cannot use Adobe Illustrator’s .ai source file. It preserves scalable vector content while reducing the transfer and storage size of an SVG document.

AI and SVGZ formats

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. Designers use it for editable logos, icons, diagrams, illustrations, packaging, and print layouts; it can contain Illustrator-specific objects, multiple artboards, linked or embedded raster images, spot colors, fonts, transparency, and effects.

Some AI files include embedded PDF-compatible data, allowing other applications to open or import them. An AI file saved without PDF compatibility may require Adobe Illustrator or another application that can interpret Illustrator-native content.

SVGZ is a standard SVG file compressed with gzip. It contains the same XML-based SVG content as an uncompressed .svg file, but gzip reduces its file size without reducing vector precision or image quality. SVGZ is useful for detailed diagrams, maps, and line artwork, although it is less convenient for manual editing because many tools expect plain .svg files.

Convert an AI file to SVGZ

Upload the AI file to the converter on 101convert.com, choose SVGZ as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Inspect the output in the intended browser, viewer, or target application, especially when the source contains effects, text, or placed images.

Adobe Illustrator is the most reliable desktop option because it can read its own native objects. Open the file and use File → Save As or File → Export → Export As, select SVG, and enable Use Artboards when separate artboards require separate files. In Illustrator versions that show Use Compression in the SVG options, enable it to create an .svgz file.

If Illustrator exports only an uncompressed SVG, compress it with gzip:

gzip -9 -c artwork.svg > artwork.svgz

Inkscape can produce SVGZ through File → Save As and Compressed SVG (*.svgz), but it may open an AI file only through embedded PDF-compatible content and may not preserve Illustrator-specific features accurately.

Export settings and compatibility

• Choose an appropriate SVG profile for the receiving software; SVG 1.1 is often the safest choice for older viewers.
• Embed placed raster images when the SVGZ must remain self-contained. Linked images require the original image files and valid paths on the receiving system.
• Keep text as text only when the target system has the required fonts. Converting text to outlines prevents font substitution but removes editable text and can enlarge the file.
• Keep the original .ai file as the editable master. SVGZ is an interchange and delivery format, not a complete replacement for Illustrator editing data.

Quality and delivery caveats

Gzip compression is lossless: it does not simplify paths, rasterize artwork, or lower image resolution. Visual changes occur during the conversion from Illustrator objects to SVG, not when SVG is compressed into SVGZ.

Illustrator live effects, appearance stacks, mesh gradients, blend modes, complex clipping, pattern behavior, spot-color workflows, and transparency may not map exactly to SVG. Depending on the export and viewer, these elements can be simplified, rasterized, flattened, or displayed differently. Test the result in the actual target application rather than relying only on a single browser preview.

For web hosting, serve an SVGZ resource with Content-Type: image/svg+xml and Content-Encoding: gzip. Do not apply another gzip layer to an existing .svgz file; some browser, editor, and embedded-device workflows support plain SVG more consistently than SVGZ.
