A mapping, web, or design application may require a compressed SVG instead of a camera or scanner image. Converting a JPG can provide scalable paths for logos and diagrams, but it requires tracing the raster image rather than simply changing the filename or container.

What JPG is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster format that stores images as a fixed grid of pixels with lossy compression. Digital cameras, phones, scanners, web browsers, image editors, and applications such as Adobe Photoshop and GIMP commonly create or export JPG files.

JPG suits photographs and continuous-tone graphics because compression keeps files relatively small. Enlarging a JPG beyond its native dimensions can reveal blur and compression artifacts. The format does not contain editable vector paths for individual shapes.

What SVGZ is

SVGZ is an SVG file compressed with gzip. SVG is an XML-based vector format that describes paths, shapes, text, gradients, and other graphic elements; those elements can scale without pixelation.

SVGZ can reduce the size of diagrams, icons, logos, maps, and flat illustrations for storage or delivery. Gzip changes the file's compression, not its drawing model. An SVGZ file may still contain an embedded JPG, so saving a JPG inside an SVGZ container does not make it vector-based.

Convert with Inkscape

1. Open Inkscape and choose File → Import to place the JPG on the canvas.
2. Select the imported image and open Path → Trace Bitmap.
3. Choose Single scan for a simple monochrome image. Use Multiple scans for colored artwork, then adjust the threshold, scan count, or color settings while previewing the result.
4. Click Apply, close the tracing panel, and move the generated paths away from the original image to check the result.
5. Delete the original JPG if the output must contain only vector artwork. Remove unnecessary nodes or correct paths manually where needed.
6. Choose File → Save As, select an SVGZ or compressed SVG file type, and save with the .svgz extension.

Inkscape is a suitable free desktop option because it exposes the tracing settings and can write compressed SVG directly. Other vector editors, including Adobe Illustrator, can trace the JPG and export SVG; if an editor only exports uncompressed SVG, compressing the valid SVG with gzip produces an SVGZ file, provided the application receiving it supports SVGZ.

Quality and compatibility limits

Use the cleanest, highest-resolution source available. Remove noise and unwanted backgrounds before tracing, and simplify excessive paths afterward. JPG compression artifacts can become unwanted vector shapes.

SVGZ support varies among editors, upload systems, and browsers. Some systems accept .svg but reject .svgz; use uncompressed SVG when required. For web delivery, the server should identify the file as image/svg+xml and serve gzip-compressed content with correct compression headers. Test the saved file in the software or device that will consume it.
