Understanding JPG and SR2 file formats

JPG (or JPEG) is a widely used compressed image format known for its balance between image quality and file size. It is commonly used for digital photography, web images, and sharing photos due to its compatibility and efficient compression.

SR2 is a proprietary raw image format developed by Sony for its digital cameras. SR2 files contain minimally processed sensor data, allowing for extensive post-processing and higher image quality, but they are much larger in size and not as universally supported as JPG files.

Can you convert JPG to SR2?

Converting a JPG file to SR2 is generally not practical or meaningful. SR2 is a raw format designed to store unprocessed image data directly from a camera sensor, while JPG is a processed, compressed format. Once an image is saved as JPG, much of the original raw data is lost and cannot be recreated. Therefore, converting JPG to SR2 does not restore the original raw quality or data.

Possible methods for conversion

If you need to use a JPG image in a workflow that requires a raw file, you can convert JPG to a DNG (Digital Negative) format using software like Adobe DNG Converter, but this does not truly restore raw data. There are currently no reliable tools that convert JPG to Sony's SR2 format, as SR2 files require specific metadata and sensor data only available at the time of capture.

Recommended software and alternatives

  • Adobe Photoshop: You can open JPG files and save them in other formats, but not as SR2.
  • Adobe DNG Converter: Converts JPG to DNG, but not to SR2, and does not restore raw data.
  • RawTherapee or darktable: Useful for editing JPGs with advanced controls, but cannot convert to SR2.

Note: If you need a raw file for editing, it is best to shoot in raw (SR2) format directly from your Sony camera. Converting from JPG to SR2 is not supported by any mainstream software due to the fundamental differences between the formats.
