How to convert jpg to icns file

A macOS application bundle, Finder item, or Dock icon may require Apple’s ICNS format instead of a JPG image. Conversion packages the artwork into the icon sizes macOS uses, but it does not add detail or transparency that the JPG does not contain.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written JPEG, is a lossy raster format intended mainly for photographs and complex images. Cameras, phones, scanners, browsers, and image editors commonly create it. JPG stores millions of colors in relatively small files, but it does not support an alpha-transparency channel, and repeated editing and saving can introduce additional compression artifacts.

What the ICNS format is

ICNS is Apple’s icon-container format for macOS applications, folders, documents, and system resources. One file can contain multiple bitmap representations, including standard and Retina resolutions, so macOS can select an appropriate image for Finder, the Dock, or an application bundle.

ICNS is more suitable than a single JPG when macOS must use the image as an icon. The container can hold images with transparency, but a JPG source starts as an opaque image. Remove its background or create transparency in an image editor and export PNG files before building the ICNS file.

How to convert JPG to ICNS

Using ImageMagick and iconutil

On macOS, the most controllable workflow uses ImageMagick to create the PNG representations and Apple’s built-in iconutil command to package them. Install ImageMagick with Homebrew if it is not already installed:

brew install imagemagick

Use a square source when possible. The following commands crop the image from the center when its proportions do not match the requested square:

mkdir MyIcon.iconset
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 16x16^ -gravity center -extent 16x16 MyIcon.iconset/icon_16x16.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 32x32^ -gravity center -extent 32x32 MyIcon.iconset/icon_16x16@2x.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 32x32^ -gravity center -extent 32x32 MyIcon.iconset/icon_32x32.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 64x64^ -gravity center -extent 64x64 MyIcon.iconset/icon_32x32@2x.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 128x128^ -gravity center -extent 128x128 MyIcon.iconset/icon_128x128.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 256x256^ -gravity center -extent 256x256 MyIcon.iconset/icon_128x128@2x.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 256x256^ -gravity center -extent 256x256 MyIcon.iconset/icon_256x256.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 512x512^ -gravity center -extent 512x512 MyIcon.iconset/icon_256x256@2x.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 512x512^ -gravity center -extent 512x512 MyIcon.iconset/icon_512x512.png
magick input.jpg -auto-orient -resize 1024x1024^ -gravity center -extent 1024x1024 MyIcon.iconset/icon_512x512@2x.png

-auto-orient applies the camera’s EXIF orientation before processing. The ^ resize modifier makes the image cover the square, and -extent crops the excess. To preserve the complete image instead, add padding in an editor or use a transparent square canvas before export.

Package the completed iconset:

iconutil -c icns -o MyIcon.icns MyIcon.iconset

The resulting MyIcon.icns can be used in a macOS application bundle or assigned to a file or folder through Finder’s Get Info window. Editing an existing application bundle can invalidate its code signature or be undone by an application update.

Using a graphical editor

Affinity Photo, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and Preview can crop the source, remove its background, and export PNG files. ICNS export support varies by application and version, so the dependable macOS workflow is to create the artwork and PNG source images in the editor, place them in a correctly named .iconset directory, and run iconutil. Xcode projects generally use an asset catalog rather than a manually maintained ICNS file for modern application builds.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert and Zamzar may provide JPG-to-ICNS conversion, although available formats and output options can change. Upload the JPG, choose ICNS, start the conversion, and download the result. Verify that the downloaded file is a valid multi-resolution ICNS rather than a renamed file or a container holding only one small bitmap. Do not upload confidential images, proprietary artwork, or application assets to a third-party service.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Use a source of at least 1024 × 1024 pixels when the icon must include a 512 × 512 Retina representation. A smaller source will be enlarged and may look soft.
  • The commands above create opaque PNGs because the JPG is opaque. Background removal must happen before packaging, and the edited artwork must be exported with an alpha channel.
  • JPG artifacts, fine detail, and text become difficult to recognize at 16 × 16 and 32 × 32 pixels. Simplify the design and inspect the smallest representations.
  • ICNS is a container, not a quality-enhancement format; it cannot restore detail lost through JPG compression.
  • iconutil is included with macOS and must run there. ImageMagick can create the PNG representations on Windows or Linux, but a separate ICNS-capable utility is needed to package and validate the final file.
