A website or application may require AVIF to reduce image size while keeping suitable visual quality. Converting a JPG is also useful when delivering images to AVIF-compatible browsers or reducing storage requirements.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy raster-image format designed mainly for photographs and other continuous-tone images. Digital cameras, phones, scanners, web browsers, and editors such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and Affinity Photo commonly create or export JPG files.

JPG compression discards image information to reduce file size. Repeatedly opening and saving a JPG can introduce additional artifacts, especially around text, sharp edges, and high-contrast details. JPG can store RGB, grayscale, and some other color modes, but it does not support transparency.

What the AVIF format is

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec and stored in an ISO Base Media File Format container derived from HEIF. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, higher-than-8-bit color, and HDR-related image data.

For many photographic images, AVIF produces a smaller file than JPG at a similar perceived quality. It is used for web delivery, storage reduction, and applications that explicitly accept AVIF. Its limitation is compatibility: older operating systems, image editors, browsers, and content-management systems may not open or process it.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

Using 101convert.com:

1. Open the JPG-to-AVIF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drag a file with the .jpg or .jpeg extension into the upload area.
3. Start the conversion and wait for the AVIF file to be generated.
4. Download the resulting .avif file.
5. Open it in an AVIF-compatible browser or editor and check its dimensions, colors, orientation, and visual quality.

This option runs without installing desktop software and is free to use. Do not upload confidential images unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Using ImageMagick locally:

1. Install an ImageMagick build with AVIF support. The build also needs an AV1-capable image delegate, commonly provided through libheif.
2. Check support with magick identify -list format and confirm that an AVIF entry is listed.
3. Convert a file with magick input.jpg -quality 50 output.avif.

The -quality value controls the encoder's quality/compression setting for a lossy export. Test values around 40 to 70; lower values generally produce smaller files but more artifacts. Quality scales differ between encoders, so a value of 50 is not directly comparable across software.

For multiple files, use an ImageMagick batch command or a desktop batch converter that explicitly lists AVIF export support. Verify the exported files rather than changing the extension from .jpg to .avif.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting a JPG cannot restore detail already removed by JPEG compression. Keep the original JPG for future editing or maximum-quality reproduction, and create one AVIF export from that source instead of repeatedly converting the AVIF.

AVIF does not automatically create transparency from a JPG because the source contains no alpha channel. Metadata such as EXIF information, ICC color profiles, GPS data, and the original orientation may be preserved, rewritten, or removed depending on the converter; check these fields if they matter.

Compare the AVIF with the JPG at its intended display size, paying particular attention to faces, foliage, text, gradients, and sharp edges. For broad compatibility, retain a JPG fallback or confirm that the target browser, editor, CMS, and operating system support AVIF.
