Free online PNG to AVIF converter

A website, application, or device may require AVIF to reduce image-transfer and storage costs while retaining transparency. Converting is most useful for photographic PNGs, gradients, and complex rendered images; simple graphics may not become smaller.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format used for screenshots, interface graphics, diagrams, text, flat-color artwork, and images requiring transparency. It supports grayscale, RGB, and RGBA color, with an alpha channel for transparent or partially transparent pixels.

Browsers, screenshot utilities, scanners, office software, and editors such as Photoshop, GIMP, Inkscape, and Affinity Photo commonly create PNG files. Because PNG compression is lossless, it preserves every pixel, but photographic images and complex gradients can be much larger than equivalent lossy files.

What the AVIF format is

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) stores still images in the HEIF container using the AV1 image codec. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, 8-, 10-, and 12-bit color, HDR, and wide-gamut color profiles.

AVIF often produces smaller files than PNG at comparable visual quality, particularly for photographs, gradients, and detailed illustrations. It is appropriate for web delivery when the target browser, application, CMS, or device supports the format. For small icons and flat-color artwork, PNG can sometimes remain smaller or sharper.

How to convert the file

Using ImageMagick

Install an ImageMagick build with AVIF support through a libheif delegate. Confirm that the format is available with:

magick identify -list format

Then create a lossy AVIF with:

magick input.png -quality 80 output.avif

Quality values are encoder-dependent; test roughly 70–85 for a starting point, then inspect the result at its intended display size. Higher values generally retain more detail and produce larger files.

To request lossless AVIF when the installed ImageMagick and HEIF encoder support it, use:

magick input.png -define heic:lossless=true output.avif

For multiple files, use ImageMagick's documented batch or shell-loop syntax rather than overwriting the source files. Keep the original PNG until the converted files have been checked.

Quality and compatibility limits

A normal AVIF conversion is not automatically lossless. Lossy encoding can add ringing, blur text edges, and alter pixel-level detail, so screenshots, diagrams, pixel art, and line drawings should be tested with lossless AVIF or a high-quality setting. Lossless AVIF preserves image data but may not provide a useful size reduction for simple graphics.

Transparency can be retained, but the encoder and destination application must both support an alpha channel. An animated PNG (APNG) is not the same as a single still PNG; converting one file may produce only one frame unless the workflow explicitly supports animation.

Current major browsers support AVIF, but PNG remains more compatible with older browsers, operating systems, document systems, image editors, and embedded devices. Provide a PNG or JPEG fallback for unsupported clients when publishing on the web. Keep the PNG as an archival or editing master when maximum compatibility, exact pixel fidelity, or repeated editing is required; AVIF is usually better as a delivery copy.
